Amazon’s Alexa is getting a more natural-sounding voice: In addition to getting a generative AI-powered upgrade, and the ability to continue conversations without again using the wakeword “Alexa,” Amazon’s voice assistant is going to gain a more natural-sounding voice. The company introduced today an updated text-to-speech engine that’s now more context-aware of the user’s emotions and the tone of your voice, which then […] http://dev.dlvr.it/2dX2cc

After shocking intro of GPT-4o the day before their I/O, I was really curious what Google will have to say about their AI today. Among many things, I view their emphasis on the integration with Android phones was most important (although they could have delivered better if they have seen GPT-4o a bit earlier). Advancing AI’s capability is one thing and making in integrated and embedded to people’s daily lives is another. Now it’s onto Apple+OpenAI.

Apple's Knowledge Navigator (1987) - taking inventory against the benchmark (ESG analysts, take note) In 1987, Apple created a vision video about the future of computer-human interaction. This vision piece, called "Knowledge Navigator" (1), predates the public Internet or Web, the Mac laptop, the iPhone, the Palm Pilot, and Clippy. Our protagonist, Michael Bradford, is a professor and researcher at Berkeley, overseeing a graduate research team in Guatemala and teaching about topics like deforestation in the Amazon rainforest to college undergraduates. Entering his office with its wooden hallowed halls, he walks to his desk, where he opens a small, folded tablet computer. The screen comes to life, with what looks like Bill Nye, the Science Guy, as a computer assistant in the corner. (It is not BN, but I shall refer to it with that anyway.) BN catches Mike up on his messages and appointments. Mike mostly interacts verbally and naturally with a few presses on the screen. There is no keyboard, and small credit card devices which we will see are like USB memory sticks (or PCMCIA?). Mike carries on as if BN was a person knowledgeable on his activities. Bring up my materials from last year; what new research articles have I not read yet? BN is a capable researcher, knows Mike's network, is able to access research data and visualize it on screen on demand. The conversation is very natural. with BN able to naturally expand upon and correct Mike. Forget Zoom - the device is able to bring his friend, Jill, on screen to collaborate and jointly perform visualizations and analytics. I remember seeing this video back then and discussing what technologies were available in the eighties and what would be necessary to bring us closer. Since then, of course, we've had the commercial Internet (1989) and the Web (1991), commercial voice recognition (1990), PCMCIA (1990), Voice over IP (VoIP 1991), the Apple Newton (1993), the growth of WIFI (2004), other portable computing devices and tablets (iPad in 2010), Siri (2011) and similar agents, GenAI with Chatbots (2022), Claude Artifacts (2024). Some things still in progress: a) the animated AI avatar; sure, there are animated AI avatars like "Call Annie". Not sure people are feeling deprived. b) the seamless interaction between human and AI; we are certainly getting closer with the voice demo of GPT4o, and Moshi.chat. I find Moshi's zeal to say something before I'm done speaking pretty annoying. c) Collaboration with multiple humans and an AI Chatbot in real-time. It's probably out there; I haven't seen it naturally. Knowledge Navigator - although it may seem quaint with its deskbound computer and 1987 era graphics - has served for 37 years as a measure against which the future of human-computer interactions can be made. The new 4o natural voice mode and Claude (shareable) Artifacts are major leaps that recently occurred, bringing us closer to the vision. (1) https://lnkd.in/eA7qqdRB

The revival of the Cupertino vs. Redmond wars are underway. Again. #everythingisaremix This move to integrate Gemini into iOS 18 is another reason you don't need to think about AI as some consumer tool you sell to someone, but integrate it into your products to make them better. Reminds me of that old BASF commercial tagline. "At BASF we don't make a lot of the products you buy. We make a lot of the products you buy, better." This is why infrastructure solutions, which are seen as boring, are essential. Now, if this helps improve search within SMS, this is a step in the right direction. "The company has explored other new AI features, including ones that would automate the creation of Apple Music playlists and make slideshows in its PowerPoint rival Keynote. Another feature under consideration is a revamped version of Spotlight, Apple’s system wide search feature. The new version would be able to toggle between specific features within apps and answer complex questions based on data trained from large language models. LLMs, the technology that powers AI tools, is developed by bombarding software with a torrent of data." (Link to news report in comments)
