As a small team leader with experience in 33KV/MV substations, one of the biggest challenges we face is working in the basement, which comes with various hazards such as electricity, confined space, low oxygen, sharp edges, low ceiling, tight working areas, and a humid atmosphere. This challenge is also influenced by the age and design of the substation we are working with. To mitigate these challenges and ensure a safe work environment, we have implemented the following actions in addition to approved safety procedures,PPE and High voltage testing : 1- Open all entrance and exit points: ensure all entrance and exit points are open and accessible to facilitate easy evacuation in case of emergencies. 2- Establish suitable storage areas: find safe and suitable locations to store tools, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers before starting work, ensuring quick access when needed. 3- Manage waste storage : establish designated areas for storing waste generated during work to maintain cleanliness and prevent hazards. 4- Assign specific roles : assign specific roles to team members to ensure efficient and safe work execution: A- Main worker and assistants: responsible for main tasks such as maintenance, installation, and dismantling. B- Light Holder: responsible for holding and aiming lights during work to ensure proper visibility. C- Team Watcher: responsible for monitoring the main workers, ensuring they avoid sudden movements, and issuing warnings when necessary. D- Tools Coordinator: responsible for bringing and replacing tools from the designated tool storage area. E- Housekeeping Personnel: responsible for managing waste disposal and maintaining cleanliness during work. F- Team Leader: responsible for supervising the team, ensuring everyone performs their tasks correctly, coordinating with the operating team, scheduling rest periods, and closing operations after completing work. Prioritizing Electrical safety at Construction sites! During my career as an EHS professional, I have always made sure electrical safety was one of the top priorities on construction sites and everyone knows a lot about electrical safety. Some of my actions are: Ø Make proper systems and documents about how to set up temporary electricity systems correctly, and make sure they are followed. Ø Give everyone who works on construction sites thorough training on how to stay safe around electricity. Ø Set strict rules for choosing and using electrical tools, with a focus on getting the right IP ratings. Ø To lower risks, make sure electrical rules and standards are followed. Ø Establish a system for competent personnel to monitor electrical installations and operations on a scheduled basis. Ø Stress how important double-earthing is and educate the workers and staff about it. Ø Inspect and maintain electrical systems on a regular basis and take care of any problems right away. Ø Encourage people to use the right safety tools, like circuit breakers and insulation monitoring. Through these proactive measures, I have successfully filled in important gaps in electricity safety, making it so that accidents almost never happen. Looking ahead, I am still committed to improving electrical safety measures and making sure that every construction site I oversee becomes a model of electrical safety success. Having not shared for some time,l have a few tips for fellow colleagues in facilities maintenance areas, The following tips, looking at all types of maintenance management can help if carried out on regular basis usually in the form of a schedule,to pre empty any issues or breakdowns with the equipment and keep it running effectively, rather than reacting to problems as they occur. 1.A careful planning of maintenance activities, having a database of previous inspections and reports from services or repairs. 2.Recording of interventions including -changing parts, -making adjustments, -changing oil, water/other components. 3. Know the manuals,as they provide detailed information that can be useful in repairs or assembling and keep them with for future reference. 4.Expensive though more important is the use of expert services and adjustment (hiring of engineers). 5.Implement the maintenance plan. 6.Set a schedule and have a list which you will eventually carry out monthly, quarterly and anually . 7.Always practice and implement safety regulations and specific requirements for all mobile work equipment .
