Today marks a special day in the world of sports and business – the anniversary of the game-changing “handshake” between Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight. If you know me, you know I’ve been a Nike fan for a long time and this story resonates as Corso starts 2024 with the launch our new post-purchase platform. Two guys with a shared passion for sports and innovation, shaking hands in a Portland hotel in the 1960s. Little did they know that this handshake would birth Nike, one of the most iconic brands in the world. This handshake wasn’t just about sealing a deal; it was a symbol of their vision to disrupt the sports footwear industry. Fast forward to today, and we find ourselves in a similar moment of opportunity at Corso. The “handshake” is a reminder of the magic that can happen when passionate people come together to create. JD Sports is buying US retailer Hibbett for $1.8 Billion, expanding their presence in the US. JD Sports is a British company that's one of the biggest sports retailers in the world, but has a much less dominant presence in America. JD already owns Finish Line & Shoe Palace but the new acquisition gives JD 1,169 new Hibbett owned stores across the US, which pits them directly against rivals like Foot Locker and Dick's. Sneaker retail has constantly been looked down as a flailing market. The story of Nike, Inc., the globally renowned athletic footwear and apparel corporation headquartered near Beaverton, begins with a keen market analysis and a brilliant entrepreneurial intuition. In the 1960s, Phil Knight, a student at Oregon University's School of Business, noticed a growing market for Japanese products in the U.S., particularly affordable and high-quality athletic shoes. Recognizing this potential, he discussed it with his coach, Bill Bowerman. With Bowerman's enthusiastic support, Knight entered into a 50-50 business deal, and on January 25, 1964, they founded Blue Ribbon Sports, marketing athletic footwear in the USA produced by the Japanese brand Onitsuka Tiger. By 1967, expanding sales led to further retail and distribution operations. Conflicts arose between Blue Ribbon and Tiger, leading to a formal split in 1971. The court settlement allowed both companies to sell their versions of the model, resulting in Nike Cortez and Tiger Corsair. Blue Ribbon Sports rebranded as Nike, with the famous “swoosh logo” designed by Carolyn Davis for only $35. Nike's success was immediate, with the Tiger Cortez and Bowerman's "Waffle" sole design. The 1980 IPO made Phil Knight a millionaire, and Nike's growth continued, marked by celebrity endorsements like Michael Jordan. The Air Jordans, launched in 1984 with patented "Air" technology, became a massive success, contributing to Nike's financial prowess and generating billions in sales. Iconic ad campaigns, starting with "Just Do It" in 1988, further boosted Nike's image. The '90s were troublesome, but Nike managed crises well. In 1991, after activist Jeff Ballinger exposed poor working conditions, Nike instated its first factory standards. In 1998, after protests, Nike raised wages and increased monitoring. In the 2000s, Nike consolidated its global leadership, acquiring Hurley (2002) and Converse (2004), and securing endorsements with LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. Arc'teryx and adidas in Canadian and U.S. trademark dispute over the mark TERREX. Arc'teryx is a Canadian high-end design company specializing in outdoor apparel and equipment headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia. It focuses on technical apparel for mountaineering and Alpine sports, including related accessories. One of its most well-known brands is GORE-TEX. The dispute with adidas in Canada focuses on the use of the brands' names at retail, with Arc'teryx alleging there is actual consumer confusion above the border. This is in part, part of the argument in the TTAB action initiated last year. Arc'teryx has opposed adidas' application for TERREX, claiming prior rights and likelihood of confusion on the theory that the actual confusion above the border will seep into the U.S. That opposition was filed in August 2023 and adidas answered in October. I conducted this poll where I really wanted to know the pain points and the problems faced by Owners and Coaches when they are buying Custom Team Uniforms for their team. Clearly, SIZING is one of the issues that everyone is facing. I think it is important as a manufacturer to go for a universal sizing but the problem is that every brand goes for their own sizing. We at Depex Sportswear usually go for sizing that is adopted by Nike and Adidas since these are the brands that are making the jerseys and uniforms for most of the international and league teams. Here are some of the tips that can be used to solve this problem, Offer a Range of Sizes: Manufacturers should be crystal clear about the size chart and put those size charts on the website. The range should be vast so that players with all kinds of sizes can check their sizes. Videos of How to Check the Sizing: Manufacturers should post videos or use infographics to show how to measure the sizes so that the teams can check their sizing watching those videos. Regular Communication: It is important to be in regular communication with the manufacturer so that they can keep you updated on sizing and resolve any issues if there are any before shipping you the Team Uniforms. This summarizes the opportunity that outdoor brands have to span their reach to the fashion conscious consumers: “In this industry, if you can make a credible, functional product that is accepted by the fashion consumer you couldn’t be in a better spot.” As one that spends a fair amount of time challenging the limits of my own outdoor gear, the ability to wear it more often rationalizes the high price point in costs per use.

This takeover will immerse customers in a nostalgic journey through sports history, perfectly timed with 2024's stacked summer of sport. I’d love to see them make a move into elite level European football kit supply in the coming years. "JD Sports Fashion has proposed to buy American athletic fashion retailer Hibbett Inc for about $1.08 billion, the companies said on Tuesday, as Britain's biggest sportswear retailer looks to expand across the southeastern U.S. The deal comes as shares in athletic clothing retailers come under pressure globally after weak outlooks from sports apparel makers such as Nike and Puma. Last month JD's U.S. rival Foot Locker also warned on 2024 profits, though Adidas last week hiked its 2024 forecast on strong demand for the German sportswear giant's sneakers.
