I'm lucky enough to be heading to Tokyo next week for SPACETIDE Foundation's Conference and Secure World Foundation's Space Sustainability Summit on behalf of The Karman Project. Let me know if you'll be there! Looking forward to contributing to SWF's Pre-Conference Workshop on Navigating Voluntary Best Practices and Principles across the #spacesustainability landscape, and returning to one of my favourite places on Earth 🇯🇵

"There is a growing focus on the importance of sustainability for resolving global challenges, and this has given rise to many different initiatives from governments, the private sector and civil society. Space is critical to addressing these challenges, but space activities themselves now face increasing sustainability challenges as well. This session highlighted both the value of space capabilities for global sustainability and the challenges of space sustainability. The session also addressed the space component of the upcoming UN “Summit of the Future” from a sustainability perspective."

The Earth∞Space Sustainability Initiative (ESSI) aims at addressing one crucial question: What does constitute *sustainable* behaviour?
By and large, the space industry strives towards better safety and sustainability, but there is still an awkward lack of shared understanding of what sustainability truly means and encompasses. Opinions vary, often by a lot, also because of an insufficient level of standardization.
ESSI has identified ten critical areas where additional standardization can help the cause of sustainability.
ESSI aims at writing sustainability principles that can then be developed in appropriate national and international standards by the relevant authorities.
These ten areas are:
🛰 Spacecraft design, manufacture and propulsion
🚀 Launch
🌠 Supporting operations in space and space weather
🤝 Rendezvous and Proximity Operations
☄ Supporting end of life and disposal
♻ Space debris mitigation
🔭 Dark skies
📡 Quiet skies and spectrum sustainability
🌍 Earth monitoring
🌔 Resource management
As a member of the Advisory Board, I look forward to review and advise ESSI on the development of the Space Sustainability Standards and other activities.

Ignasi Ferrer Pellicer loves to be on the water 🌊, catching the wind. He has teamed up with Anna Lloveras Armengol, Carole Viaene and Mireia de Mas Romeu to build Ocean Ecostructures.
⏩ What are they up to? 📢
Ocean Ecostructures is turning our marine infrastructure 🛢 from grey and lifeless to blue 🐠 and thriving. They build and deploy Life Boosting Units that regenerate and monitor marine habitats, anywhere, fast.
⏩ Why did Norrsken Accelerator Invest?
We’re dependent on our oceans - marine based infrastructure is exploding. Ocean Ecostructures makes sure that vibrant marine habitats can follow.
They have created proprietary tech that lines the walls of our ocean infra ⛴ , bringing back plant 🏵 and animal 🐟 life. Their units are smart too - allowing instant monitoring 🔎, reporting and tracking of their positive impact under the sea.
They have already sold 100 units, and are working with the largest ocean infrastructure companies to deploy millions more 🚀 🚀.
⏩ The best bit.
THE ENERGY ⚡ ! This team is in constant motion, ideating, creating and improving. When they are at Norrsken House, the lights shine brighter.
⏩ Where can you meet them? 👋
They'll be on stage at Stockholm Impact Week this Thursday, or you can say hi here (link in comments)
