Looking deeper into companies, there are troubling signs for the next generation of senior female leadership: Progress has stalled—and gone backwards for Black women—in the early promotions that are important for career trajectories. The latest McKinsey/LeanIn.org look at women in the workplace shows signs that companies may have taken a check the box approach to diversity that could create problems in building tomorrow's talent pool. In honor of Women's History Month, let's take a moment to recognize the important role that women leaders play in public service. The Partnership's Public Service Leadership Institute develops leaders from all levels, empowering them to drive systemic change and ensure that agencies meet the diverse needs of those they serve. Recently, the Partnership conducted research to understand certain patterns in leadership experience, specifically examining the differences and similarities between how women and men understand and experience their roles as public service leaders, and explored the intersections between race, ethnicity, and gender in public service leadership. Despite progress, women are still significantly underrepresented in leadership positions in all sectors around the world. This is especially true for women of color, who now account for only 4% of the C-suite level, or top-level corporate positions, in the US despite making up 20.3% of the country’s population. The public sector has shown similarly slow progress, with women making up just 27.3% of the US Congress and only 39% of all Senior Executive Service members. This Women's History Month, let's celebrate the achievements of women leaders in the public service sector and work to create a more equitable and inclusive workplace that empowers all leaders to drive systemic change and build a better government for all Americans. https://hubs.la/Q02mSjhm0
