This article attempts to make the case that Trump has a coherent foreign policy vision that neocon holdovers screwed up and that the next Trump administration would fix that, The facts do not support this outrageous claim about Trump's vision and why some initiatives failed. Whatever success could have resulted from positive steps in Korea were countered by Trump's narcissism and his need for recognition and legacy rather than the scheming of John Bolton and other neocons. South Korean president Moon recognized the historical opportunity and achieved agreement with Kim, the North Korea leader, but Trump excluded Moon from discussions and failed to recognize what was possible. If Trump had a foreign policy vision to stabilize global conflicts how could he possibly have even considered exiting from JCPOA? JCPOA was the result of more than a decade of negotiations within the framework of the Security Council to prevent nuclear proliferation in the Middle East. When Trump exited JCPOA his CIA and other intelligence agencies confirmed that Iran was in full compliance with JCPOA. This was also the position of Israeli military intelligence. The consequences of exiting JCPOA are that the international community and certainly the US now has no levers to influence Iran's behavior short of military action against Iran. Iran now sends weapons to Russia to attack Ukraine and destabilize Europe. Iran also actively supports Hamas and Hezbollah and supports the Houthi, all who counter American interests and endanger Israel's survival. This piece in Foreign Affairs looks more like pandering by academics seeking opportunity in a possible Trump administration than an analysis of the foreign policy performance of the Trump administration.

In “Why America Can’t Have It All,” Stephen Wertheim makes the case that Washington must choose between primacy and prioritizing. He points to the promises the Biden administration made while taking office and reality it finds itself in today. He writes “The Biden administration took office intending to inject strategic focus into U.S. foreign policy. The president and his team promised to end the United States’ forever wars and make the country’s international engagements serve the needs of a disaffected public. In its first year, the administration terminated the two-decade-old war in Afghanistan, pledged to “right-size” the U.S. military presence in the Middle East, and even pursued a “stable and predictable” relationship with Russia. Today that vision lies in tatters. The United States is now immersed in multiple wars in Europe and the Middle East, precisely where the administration sought to keep things quiet. Speaker Mike Johnson's speech to the Hudson Institute was a cogent and clear statement of Republican foreign policy. It is well worth reading the entire speech. Here is a small excerpt: "Our actions here in America will continue to determine the path of the free world. And in that sense, there’s survival of liberty around the world. All of us here recognize that while democracy is not perfect, the burden of self-government is certainly far lighter than the yoke of tyranny. But right now, absent American leadership, we’re looking at a future that could be well-defined by communism and tyranny, rather than liberty and opportunity and security. In Europe, Putin has made it clear that his plans don’t stop with Ukraine. He’s likened himself to Tsar Peter the Great, and you can read his essay about restoring the Russian Empire, an empire that would include our military partners in Vilnius, Helsinki, and Warsaw. Xi Jinping made abundantly clear he’s interested in expanding his communist footholds, including in the South China Sea. In the Middle East, the Ayatollah wants to resurrect the caliphate and eliminate Israel. They say these things out loud. And with their rising hostilities, we risk the loss of free navigation in the Indo-Pacific and the Red Sea, and we risk devastating economic harm, of course, if we lose access to semiconductors in Taiwan or have reduced trade with Europe. At the same time, we risk returning to an era where sheiks control Jerusalem and the Jewish people have no land to call their own. Now, you hear a lot of criticism about Republicans, and as a leader in the Republican Party, we’re sure these threats have been growing for some time, but under weak presidents, they’ve been allowed to metastasize rather dramatically. As Republicans, conservatives, we call this out, because it’s alarming. We have to speak bluntly and we have to tell the truth. These are objective facts. During the Obama administration, we saw eight years of international apology tours. We saw the sequestration of our military, the buildup of ISIS, Russia’s invasion in the Crimea, the spread of maligned Chinese influence around the globe, and a nuclear deal that gave Iran everything they wanted. And what are we facing today? The same failures we saw under Obama have happened under Joe Biden, because he’s empowered an out-of-touch foreign policy establishment who has an agenda very different than the one that we need right now. Their agenda is about, once again, appeasing and apologizing and accommodating. Joe Biden doesn’t treat China like an enemy. He’s stopped supporting Israel, and has cozied up to Iran to revive the failed nuclear deal. And in the most inexplicable policy imaginable, he’s opened our borders wide to spies and terrorists, while reducing sanctions on Latin dictators who wreak havoc in our backyard. And the results of this were completely foreseeable, and we’re all living through it."
