@wgr Women in Government Relations invites you to submit a session proposal for our signature Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Summit taking place May 8-9, 2024. This year’s theme, “Building the Community We Need" invites government relations professionals to join together in dialogue that transcends lines of difference. We invite you to submit your session proposal for a 45-minute session that offers practical tools and ideas to advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the government relations field and in advocacy and public policy. All sessions will be hosted virtually, and all speakers are invited to attend an in-person reception in Washington, DC on May 9th. Session strands include: Professional Development - sessions cultivate the dispositions and skills we need, as professionals, to champion DEI across our relationships and teams. Share and practice individual strategies for reflection, allyship, and action. Organizational Transformation - sessions elevate effective models for seeding and scaling DEI strategies across campaigns and workplaces. Share approaches to setting goals and tracking progress to advance organizational priorities. Policy Issue Focus - sessions explore DEI through case studies for attendees with any level of issue area expertise. Share how government relations professionals are combining personal development and organizational transformation to advance meaningful policy change. Submission Requirements Session proposals must be submitted by practitioners or vendors in advocacy, government relations, public affairs, regulatory affairs, or relevant practice areas. The strongest session proposals will feature a focused resource, strategy, or activity. Sessions that include interactive elements will be prioritized. The last event and the first edition... When we decided to create an experienced members category for Nigerian Women in PR this year, it was because we realised that it the needs of #publicrelations professionals differ, based on their longevity in the industry. Particularly, it was to design and provide extensive resources to mid-management women in public relations to support their ambition to deliver more value and eventually become part of management teams and boards of organisations. Thanks for sharing this very candid write up on the evolution of women’s role and impact in public affairs (PA). George Skaria has presented the changing face of PA so well, and I am thrilled to have been a part of this journey; every drop matters.. every step is critical towards paving the way for more women to be a part of this most critical role that bridges thought leadership amongst diverse stakeholders. At times,PA is almost an invisible domain, subtly identifying risks for organizations and in finding convergences and new ways to cooperate in a fragmented world. The increasing contribution of women public affairs professionals in rebuilding dialogue, and in catalyzing win-win partnerships reflects the tremendous gains that more women would add tothis field at all levels, right upto leadership and boards. And, yes, we need more Allies to partner with us to make #SAFE public policy (securing access to fair and equitable resources) a reality. Look at all the successful people you know or look up to—they're all highly networked. Whether you're a professional or entrepreneur, networking is essential for career growth. But when it comes to pursuing board seats, networking is even more important. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀 Board members are often recruited through personal networks. So, if you want to increase your chances of getting a board seat, you need to build relationships with people who are already on boards, as well as with recruiters and other professionals who can help you connect with board opportunities. Each week for the next couple of months we'll highlight one of our authors and publish an extract or synopsis of their chapter. #WWIPRChapterSummary To kick off this series I'm delighted to introduce Keren Darmon who wrote the chapter 'Women’s-Only Networking in PR: Discourse Analysis of the Entanglement of Barriers and Benefits'. Keren is is a teaching fellow in Media and Communications at the University of Greenwich, London, UK. She has a PhD in Media and Communications from the London School of Economics and Political Science, awarded in 2017, with no corrections. Prior to embarking on her PhD, Keren was a senior member of the Government Communications Service. Keren’s current research interests are at the juncture of feminist media studies and media and communications practice, namely exploring the role, function and purpose of women-only networks in these industries. She is currently researching the discourse on blogs about the menopause published by UK-based members of women-only networks for women in PR and advertising. Her chapter explores the entanglement of barriers and benefits of women-only network membership. It uses discourse analysis to examine the ways in which the website texts of Women in PR and Global Women in PR construct the function, purpose and role of women-only networks for women working in PR. The chapter takes a feminist approach and sheds light on the relationship between the ways these networks position themselves and the ways in which the current, neoliberal, postfeminist sensibility of the wider media culture work to construct the parameters within which women working in PR can consider themselves and their career opportunities. It identifies the benefits – solidarity, community and collective action – and the barriers – motherhood, menopause, sexual harassment and assault – that women encounter and stresses the important, feminist potential that women-only networks can offer to their members. The principles we follow and adopt to communicate change to our internal stakeholders. Here in the UK, today is election day.
