Extremely excited to see Hany Farid launch his company, GetReal Labs. Hany and I have spent many years together discussing the merits and drawbacks of both 'Media Provenance' and 'Detection'. What's for certain is that the digital media ecosystem has forever changed, and we need all of the intellectual horsepower possible to restore trust in visual media. Provenance & Detection can work in tandem to create spectacular results for enterprise. As Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) markers/signals start to permeate the ecosystem thanks to adoption from OpenAI, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Adobe, Meta, Qualcomm and many others - we will enhance downstream visibility for detection systems. And, for all of the bad actors that create fake media with malintent - Hany and company will be there to help detect. The 'authenticity' category is continuing to accelerate at a rapid rate, which is incredibly encouraging for the ecosystem! SO much exciting work to come.

Looking ahead, the trajectory of deepfake technology sparks both concern and cautious optimism. While it's undeniable that deepfakes pose significant challenges to society, politics, and personal privacy, I believe that the topic is a bit overblown. 🔮🤖 Technological advancements such as cryptographic signing and hardware-based authentication offer promising solutions to ensure the authenticity of digital content. These innovations could play a pivotal role in mitigating the spread of malicious deepfakes. Just as past fears about newspapers, radio, and TV were eventually allayed, I believe we'll develop mechanisms to detect and debunk deepfakes, bolstering our collective immunity to misinformation. However, deepfake technology presents complex ethical, societal, and political challenges that demand ongoing attention and proactive measures. Collaboration between technologists, policymakers, and the public will be essential in navigating the evolving landscape of digital manipulation. In essence, while the threat of deepfakes is real, I'm hopeful that our resilience, innovation, and collective resolve will enable us to confront and ultimately overcome this challenge in the years to come. #misinformation #aiethics #deepfake

Did you hear of the $25,000,000 deepfake scam? Essentially, a staff member for a bank was convinced to transfer $25.6 million into an account by scammers. Sounds ridiculous, but when you have a video call with the CFO and several other high level co-workers confirming the transaction needs to be made, you would consider the request to be genuine. This is what happened with a Hong Kong firm being victim to the first of its kind AI heist. AI was used to fake voice and video to commit the perfect social engineering attack.
