Cool partnership between Uber and Cambridge Mobile Telematics focused on safe driving. This has been a big pet peeve of mine since until now, rideshare drivers have been basically incentivized to drive unsafely, since the more trips they complete per hour, the more money they make. So if a driver sees a yellow light, and speeds through, they’ll get to their passenger pick-up location faster, and increase their utilization/earnings per hour. The key part of the new ‘advantage program’ is that, according to Uber, drivers with higher safety scores will now have the opportunity to earn more than other drivers. This is BIG! The only problem is that Uber says drivers who qualify for ‘advantage mode’ will earn 5% more, but Uber no longer has base pricing, so 5% more than what? Obviously this is just a pilot/starting point, but I’d love to see Uber put its money where its mouth is and also prove that drivers who maintain a higher score, will indeed get paid more. Drivers need to see the benefits to believe it. ‘Continued access to exclusive trip requests at airport queues’ sounds good but I’m not sure what it means. If drivers were to earn a one time ‘skip the line at the airport queue’ for every week of safe driving for example, I guarantee you, we’ll see a lot more safe driving :)

Cool to see Uber testing new ways to use driver’s phone sensors along with their telematics partner Cambridge Mobile Telematics. Hard braking is a leading indicator of accidents which obviously costs Uber a lot of money but also drivers, since they’ll be unable to earn money and have to pay for the cost of deductible/repairs. The downside of this type of pilot is that it seems like ‘Big Brother’ is watching you, but I like the messaging here since Uber is encouraging safer driving and highlights how it will also benefit drivers: less accidents and better evidence in case of false deactivation. Good first step. Going forward, I’d like to see Uber start rewarding the safest drivers - priority dispatch, priority customer support, better bonuses, discounts on dash cams, etc.
