-- GPT-4o-Drafted Patent Specification Via ChatGPT -- Yesterday, I shared a post with a video showing how ChatGPT could, in principle, use OpenAI's new model, GPT-4o, for patent drafting. Here's a link: https://lnkd.in/eAbSPvv9. It should go without saying that I tested it using an invention that isn't confidential, but I'll say it again anyway! I took the content ChatGPT produced (shown in the video included in the post mentioned above) and formatted it in roughly the style of a patent specification. I've attached that to this post. It's not going to win a prize for the best patent specification ever! It's very short. The Title, Field, and Background sections strongly hint at the solution, which most seasoned patent practitioners would avoid. Did claim 1 really need the temperature control, moisture control *and* aeration system; or indeed any of those? Figure 1 doesn't look too bad to me as a representative drawing. But Figures 2 to 5 are a bit wild. I think it's fair to say that the example shown in Figure 2 is 'over-engineered' to say the least - imagine the upkeep on that! It was very quick to generate though (c. 90 seconds in ChatGPT and c. 3 minutes of formatting in Word). I find ChatGPT fun for (safe) experiments with patent drafting, but there are much better ways to draft sensible patent specifications using generative AI. I'm curious to know: what would you score this patent specification out of 10 *ignoring the fact that it was produced by ChatGPT*? #ChatGPT #OpenAI #PatentDrafting

One thing about #AI and #ChatGPT that I think the legal field might be underestimating is its ability to understand writing, and how that can be used with other services to, say, automatically calendar a case management order (as can already be done). As I mentioned in a previous post, I've been toying with #OpenAI's new Custom GPT feature to create a version of ChatGPT specifically tailored to Florida lawyers. No matter what you do, GPT does not understand legal reasoning. But it does understand linguistic reasoning. As such, when you receive an order, it can figure out what that order says with great accuracy, even if it doesn't understand the legal meaning of the order. For example, if you get a case management order with a bunch of different deadlines in different spots, it will tell you what the deadlines are with very good accuracy. This leads into another thing that GPTs can do: work with third-party services. Now that I have a list of deadlines, I've set up the GPT to work with Google Calendar so that I can just say "make a deadline entry for each of these dates" and it will proceed to create a batch of calendar entries for the deadlines. Based on the way I've defined the action, the calendar events have case name and deadline type in the title, are set to all day, and have my preferred reminder. Note I've done all of this in a few hours' of tinkering with no programming experience--only a basic understanding of how APIs work and the ability to watch YouTube. It's buggy and kind of jank, but the product didn't exist before this month. I guarantee you Microsoft, Google and a dozen other companies are racing to make this kind of action faster and more seamless, and we will see this kind of functionality rolled into #Outlook and #GSuite as a beta sooner rather than later. I don't think we're anywhere remotely close to lawyers or legal administrators being completely replaced by robots. But just as with PCs, online research, email, OCR, etc, we are about to see a big leap in efficiency that will cut down the amount of time needed to do certain common tasks that would otherwise be time consuming.

GPT-4o OpenAI on Monday announced its latest artificial intelligence large language model that it says will make ChatGPT smarter and easier to use. The new model, called GPT-4o, is an update from the company’s previous GPT-4 model, which launched just over a year ago. The model will be available to unpaid customers, meaning anyone will have access to OpenAI’s most advanced technology through ChatGPT. Based on the company’s Monday demonstration, GPT-4o will effectively turn ChatGPT into a digital personal assistant that can engage in real-time, spoken conversations. It will also be able to interact using text and “vision,” meaning it can view screenshots, photos, documents or charts uploaded by users and have a conversation about them. Murati said that OpenAI will launch a ChatGPT desktop app with the GPT-4o capabilities, giving users another platform to interact with the company’s technology. GPT-4o will also be available to developers looking to build their own custom chatbots from OpenAI’s GPT store, a feature that will now also be available to non-paying users. The updated technology and features are set to roll out to ChatGPT in the coming months.
