I have been fortunate enough to find 'just' enough time to read The EB110 Book (Johann Petit et al.), Bugatti: The Italian Decade (Gautam Sen) and recently Bugatti The true story of the EB110 (Dario Trucco with several materials from Chiara Stanzani). I think anyone who has what I believe to be a 'true' interest in Bugatti, should read the book by Dario Trucco. My definition of 'true' is somewhat biased but I will explain it here. Bugatti may have made several luxury/opulent cars but it set the scene with its light race cars. To this day some of the most hardcore owners will still take their racing Type 35 up one of the British or other hill-climbs or circuits. While the EB110 didn't have a large shoe-horn radiator at the front, it defined what a cutting edge performance car needed to be. It was overshadowed by the McLaren F1 (which cost twice as much), which in itself can be considered an achievement. The book very accurately captures the DNA of Modenese 'meccanica' and Turinese 'design'. I think these two elements of Made in Italy gave the iconic French brand the injection of energy to propel it to new success. What do a racehorse and a successful musician have in common? They both have blinders on when they work. Blinders block out the peripheral, everything going on around them. For horses, if they didn't have those blinders, they would be so distracted and scared from what’s going on around them that they’d fall. We humans have the same risk if we aren’t able to focus on the task ahead rather than other things and people around us. We find that even ourselves are often distracted, and worried with what’s going on around us rather than what we are trying to do and focus on. This leaves us more prone to fall than succeed.
