Jane Goodall encourages us to choose the nature of how we want to express that. At the start of the pandemic, I found myself spontaneously writing some reflections about hope. The grim rise in Covid deaths and the enormous collective global grief inspired it. At the end, I felt the clear calling to step up in service and contribute to the well-being of others. It is easy to slip into a hopeless feeling about the world as we see it. We may feel quite powerless to really do much about that. However, I encourage others to save the moment and release the idea of saving the world. When we commit to offering light, we can restore our sense of purpose and meaning. We all need to be reminded of the fundamental goodness in each other. We see it readily rise to the surface when we notice someone in trouble. The result of our assistance is obvious. We need to bring that awareness to our daily encounters. When we mobilize the intentions of our heart, we recognize the countless opportunities to shine generosity. As Mother Teresa suggested, "Do not seek to do great things, but small things with great love". Whether it is a smile or a genuine inquiry about how someone is doing, we can impact the arc of another's day. We are the soul helpers that are desperately needed now. It is essential to understand that we touch one in every act of kindness. We spark hope when we remind others that they matter by caring about what they say. The legacy of our life will be comprised of the many moments that someone let us know that they needed us. We are always needed. In the end, we will be asking ourselves, "Did I love well?".
