In today’s Data-Driven Biotech Mondays, I’d like to spotlight a Charles River Laboratories site in Hungary. Charles River, a CRO, offers a range of services to the pharmaceutical industry, with this particular highlight focusing on small molecules projects. A critical safety measure during the ADME/Tox screening phase is the assessment of drug transporter inhibition. The objective is minimal inhibition to prevent potential toxic events. This consideration extends beyond the drug in question, as drug-drug interactions become significant in a more comprehensive evaluation of drug transporters. The process is tedious, time-consuming, labor-intensive, and costly due to the extensive number of sampling points required. So Charles River teamed up with TetraScience to address the challenge. They invested 5 months into updating their data management and preparation efforts, and trained a model is order to reduce the time and cost. Ultimately they were able to produce a model that improved their calculation accuracy and reduced the necessary sampling points in half. As the project matures, they anticipate a 50% reduction in lab experiments per drug. The sampling reduction is for sure notable, but I believe that the true value lies in the data systems built, which can be repurposed not only for this project but for future innovations as well! ========= Want to hear about more use cases like this, or have one you’d like highlighted? But the need to limit antibiotic use and the uncertainty around reimbursement has limited larger companies’ investment in this area. Today most innovation is driven by universities and small, under-resourced biotech companies, which account for 95% of the new antibiotics in research and development. The answer is clearly 'no,' so the more interesting question is 'why'?'—perhaps one of the most important questions for our industry. When we first asked ourselves that question, more than a decade ago, it followed a more soul-searching one: ‘what if we're wrong?’ A healthy question, but not one that is typical of consultancies. Understanding how companies create value from their pipelines means being open to novel and multiple approaches - we produce this Index so that we know what we’re talking about when we talk about pharmaceutical innovation.
