I’ve been at several conference panels where residents and fellows asked what they should know before being an attending physician. In the panels, there are attending physicians who are in private practice and in academia. I am surprised to hear the same themes coming up over and over again. My Exciting New Internship: Hands-On Learning in the Healthcare Field: I am thrilled to share the incredible experience and learning opportunities I’ve had so far during my new internship in the healthcare field. This role has provided me with a diverse array of responsibilities that have significantly enriched my understanding of the medical profession and patient care. Doing Clinical Rounds: Participating in clinical rounds has been one of the most insightful experiences of my internship. This hands-on experience has allowed me to observe the practical application of medical knowledge and the collaborative nature of patient care. It has also provided me with a deeper understanding of various medical conditions and treatment protocols. Dose Calculations: Learning to perform dose calculations has been a challenging yet rewarding aspect of my role. Accurate dose calculations are critical to ensuring that patients receive the correct amount of medication based on factors such as age, weight, and medical condition. Counting Medications: One of my important tasks involves counting medications, which has taught me the importance of accuracy and attention to detail in the healthcare environment. This responsibility ensures that patients receive the correct dosage of their prescribed medications, which is crucial for their treatment and recovery. Checking Expiry Dates: Another critical aspect of my role is checking the expiry dates of medications. This task is vital for patient safety, as expired medications can be ineffective or even harmful. By regularly inspecting and organizing the pharmacy inventory, I help maintain a safe and efficient system for medication distribution. Maintaining Medical Records: Maintaining medical records is a fundamental part of my internship. I have been trained to update patient files accurately, ensuring that all medical histories, treatments, and prescriptions are documented correctly. This task has underscored the significance of confidentiality and precision, as accurate medical records are essential for providing high-quality patient care. This internship has been an invaluable learning experience, contributing significantly to my personal and professional growth.
