California is requiring home owners to get rid of 10GW (order of magnitude) gas heaters for swimming pools and electrify. The main aim of the policy is to reduce emissions through electrification, but it will also produce a couple of TWh (Tera!!) gas savings per year. The electrification will add new electric load to the system (not all of it to the grid because of local PV) BUT it will be flexible load. Remember, a swimming pool is a (badly insulated) warm water storage. Let’s take a look at the size: Assume an average small residential pool, 2x3x6 [m3]. 36m3 or 36,000,000 g water. Heating such “standard pool” by 1K (temperature increase) requires 36Mcal or 150 MJ or 41.7 or about 40 kWh. Dimensioning the heater: heating it for the pool party should work in a day or so. Therefore, 10Kelvin (net, after losses to go to 24C) should be about right, implying about 10kW power delivery (heat) for the ~500kWh required. A heat pump would help (ideally the installation is pumping heat from the fancy villa behind the pool ;)). Long story short: California is therefore introducing: An 10 GWe “pool flex pool”. Clean air ( and clean water ) are so overrated 🧐

Dutch water provider, Vitens, are considering introducing an increased rate for 'luxury water' use (non-essential water usage that includes filling a swimming pool in the summer) in response to the drier climate in the Netherlands as a result of climate change. As a proponent of charging more for water usage generally, this seems like a wholly sensible move to me. Will we see utilities in the UK propose similar measures soon too?
