My 25th season as a Grimsby Town Football Club supporter! Not something I’d ever thought I would have on my CV as a hobby when I was growing up in Belfast! I’m now a season ticket holder and have many friends and family here. Life can present curveballs, taking us in directions we never expected. With Grimsby Town I’ve experienced the pain of relegation and play off final defeats, and the joy of promotions and cup wins (especially the League Cup win against Liverpool in 2001!) This experience reminds me of the career transitions many of us go through. We often start with one path in mind, only to discover new opportunities that lead us elsewhere. I still live in Belfast, but just in the same way I found a 2nd home in Grimsby, the choices we make in our careers can open doors we never imagined. Embracing these unexpected turns can lead to personal growth, new connections, and exciting possibilities. Whether it’s a new industry, role, or location, each decision shapes our journey and can lead to greater fulfillment. As with football, the key is to stay open to change and be ready to seize the opportunities that come our way. My Football Adventures: A “Self-Motivation” story. Through self-motivation, relentless practice, and studying the game's greats, the intention of playing not just for fun but in a team began to seem achievable when I joined up to play in this Football Match. With encouraging words, leading by example, and always pushing others to believe in themselves as much as they did, the team's atmosphere transformed. We fostered a belief that together, we could rise above our ranks, play better, and win. My moment of glory wasn’t far behind. In this crucial match, with the team's hopes hanging by a thread. One goal came, a slick maneuver past the defense, a shot fired into the net. Then another, a testament to determination, fighting through fatigue and pressure. And then, miraculously, a third – a hat-trick of goals that seemed to defy belief. It was Unbelievably Magical. As the final whistle blew, victory was ours, but it was more than just a win; it was a testament to what belief, motivation, and teamwork could achieve. The team, once underdogs, had been transformed into champions, with me, not just a player, but a leader who had shown that the greatest victories often start with a single step of self-motivation. Another FA Cup weekend has come and gone, and what a set of matches it was. From the classic showdown between Wolves and West Brom, to the near-upset of my Team United at Newport (But lets not talk about that), and the underdog triumph of Maidstone over Ed Sheeran's Ipswich Town, there were plenty of thrills and surprises. It just goes to show that in football, as in recruiting, anything can happen, and it's important to make the most of every opportunity. 🏆 The Ipswich vs Maidstone game was a prime example of this - despite Ipswich having 38 shots and 13 on target, it was Maidstone who made the most of their chances, with only 2 shots and 2 on target, coming out on top with a 2-1 victory. This serves as a reminder that in recruitment, as in football, quality can often matter more than quantity. It's not just about the volume of candidates, but about finding the right fit and making the most of those opportunities. So, as we move forward into the week, let's remember the lessons from this FA Cup weekend. In 2020, Leon Marchand emailed Michael Phelps’ coach, Bob Bowman, and asked for an opportunity to train with him. Bowman accepted him to Arizona State University and in 2023, Marchand beat Phelps’ 15-year world record for the 400m individual medley. And just this week, Marchand won his first gold medal on home soil at the Paris Olympics. As regular non-athletic folks, we look at athletes and shrug – what could we possibly learn from this superhero, who has been winning championships since the age of 17? The key here is that Leon wasn’t given any opportunities; he went out and made his own opportunities. If he didn’t send that email, who knows what the rest of his journey would look like.   Regardless of industry, thinking you’re not good enough is common. Guess what? You may not be good enough – yet.   Marchand may have been born with talent. But he knew he needed a good coach, just like everyone else.   Make those connections. Send those emails. Tell your role models that you admire them. Look for opportunities to grow and learn from those who have great track records. You may not get a gold medal, but the feeling of going after what you want and betting on yourself might feel just as good. #parisolympics #jobsearch #perserverance

Is it realistic? Can the Product hold its own and beat competitors in the market? Do you have a clear understanding of the TAM? How many people are hitting quota on the team? What is the turnover like on the team? Are the tools and support available to hit your number? With recruitment, both candidates and employers are looking for the right fit. There's a Goldilocks effect. Sometimes a candidate may not feel involved enough. Other times, they may feel that too much is put on their shoulders. For a fit to work, it needs to be where the candidate can be their best self and that suits what the employer needs. This can be seen in the sporting world. There's a good chance you've never heard of Mario Hezonja but his career arc is relevant to all employers or prospective employees. Guess what I spotted at Dunedin airport? The Black Jersey What does this Jersey mean? It depends who you ask I imagine To teams that play the All Blacks they probably know that they’re going to be in for a battle To NZ rugby players it’s what most aspire to become, to put that black jersey on or perhaps to create a legacy or to honour that legacy of all the greats that played before them and leave it in a better place once they have moved on. The one thing that everyone can learn from is the standards that the All Blacks set is a continual drive for excellence and that winning is everything. In an age where participation is rewarded without the pressure to get a result, have we become to soft and accepting of “ AVERAGE or PARTICIPATION MEDALS?” You either create a focus on winning or a focus on participation.
