What does it mean to embed social value into the fabric of our cities, and how can we measure its impact effectively? This question has sparked a passionate dialogue across Australia, as we presented our new discussion paper, Social Value in the Built Environment — the result of a partnership between Hassell and Green Building Council of Australia. From Sydney to Brisbane, Melbourne to Perth, industry professionals gathered to explore how to integrate social value into projects and develop consistent, effective methods for measuring its outcomes. The enthusiasm at each event was evident, thanks in no small part to the speakers who led these critical discussions, and the engaged audiences who contributed their insights and questions. 🔗 Dive into the key takeaways from our Social Value in the Built Environment events and join the conversation to help shape the future of our cities: https://lnkd.in/gcAV7B-6 📷 Perth event photography by James Campbell. Not far from now, I will hold a presentation on the importance of social sustainability in creating sustainable urban environments. Since the beginning of my involvement in landscape architecture -and urban planning- my focal point layed on the importance of the built environment in shaping social behaviours and vice versa. Now, 18 years later, I have the opportunity to unfold my knowledge and experience, in basically one sentence... "I believe that public space should be intentional: it should be obvious that you belong." - Janet Echelman (Image by Brittani Burns) #IFLA #SocialSustainability #equity #Sustainableurbandevelopment #urbanplanning #landscapearchitecture #socialscience #design #art #culture #knowledge #participation #representation #collaboration #diversity #inclusion #DesignMatters #landmarch #iflaworldcongress #ifla2023 #15minutescity #sustainableurbanmobility #carlosmoreno #artsandculture #neb #neweuropeanbauhaus #placemaking #tacticalurbanism #schoolstreets #dementia #places #placeidentity #humanscale #technology #eyelevel #circulareconomy #accessibility

Landscape Architect | Harmonizing Nature & Urbanity | Pioneering Adaptive Design Across Diverse Systems
“Green Dreams, Red Solutions: Navigating Capitalism’s Landscape as a Landscape Architect 🌿” Spencer R. Scott’s piece, “If capitalism is a cancer, what are we? What immunology taught me about living on Earth,” has been my go-to brain itch. As a Landscape Architect in America, it’s like staring at our design sketches and realizing they’re a snapshot of capitalism’s contradictions. Just like a tumor’s inner sanctum shields itself, capitalism often safeguards a select few from its own chaos. It’s a dance between designing for sustainability and dodging the relentless rhythm of endless growth. Enter the wild suggestion: socialism as the antidote. Yeah, I know, “dirty word” alert. But in the Land of the Free, it’s time to free up our minds too. Shifting to a sustainable future requires redesigning more than just landscapes—it’s about the blueprint of our society. Socialism, with its flair for equity and communal vibes, might just be the redesign we’ve been sketching in the margins. As Landscape Architects, we know a thing or two about balance. So, let’s tip the scales, laugh in the face of complexity, and ask ourselves: If capitalism is the fever dream, could socialism be the chill pill? 😄 #GreenDesigns #SocialismCooling #LandscapeLaughs #truenorthstrong #capitalism #socialismaintadirtyword #socialism #health #wellbeingforall #oneworld #humancentereddesign #humanitymatters #economicsustainability #designchallenge #homeofthebrave

WilkinsonEyre's Nuno Correia, Head of Sustainability, spoke about retrofitting Canary Wharf and our project Citi Tower in the Architects’ Journal article 'Retrofitting Canary Wharf: is there life in the Isle of Dogs yet?' ‘You won’t get that opportunity [for complete office-to-residential conversion] in a lot of cases where you’ve got 20 to 30m from façade to core,’ says Correia. ‘My prediction is we will see more mixed-use buildings instead.’ Click here to read the full article https://bit.ly/47OqRoW Click here to learn more about Citi Tower https://bit.ly/3uskkC6

The urban lifestyle is becoming more and more popular 🏙️ Demographic data shows that cities are constantly developing, and more and more people live in them from year to year. Through the architectural style we have developed in cities for years, in the summer they become a huge island of heat and become simply dangerous for us. However, many cities are already aware of this problem and try to fight it with the help of interesting architectural projects containing oasis of green and water. Here are some of the most interesting: 🟢 Jaworznickie Planty Water Playground, by RS + Robert Skitek, Poland, 🟢 Freedom Square, by 501 Architects, Lithuania, 🟢 Landscape of the Future Garden, by Atelier Dyjg, China, 🟢 The Australian Garden, by Taylor Cullity Lethlean + Paul Thompson, Australia, 🟢 Benjakitti Forest Park, by Turenscape + Arsomslip Community and Environmental Architect, Thailand. Do you know any interesting projects of this type? #green #climate #cityarchitecture
