I let people down. I challenged a racist comment on Twitter (X) last week, and then subsequently deleted my reply and closed the app. Delighted with myself – thinking I’d achieved something by not getting involved.     And yes, there is real personal value in not getting involved. Why waste your time and your energy? You can’t argue with stupid. When you argue with stupid, you've lost.   I was online to further bask in the outpouring of joy and celebration at Rhasidat Adeleke winning a silver medal in European championship women’s 400 metres. Running a PB in the process. Rhasidat was born and grew up in Dublin. She is the daughter of Nigerian parents who emigrated to Ireland. She earned a scholarship to college in America and was amazing over there on the NCAA circuit, Turning professional before last years world championships where she finished 4th in the final. Ireland won 4 medals, and came 10th in the medal table – which is unheard of for us. And I don’t doubt Rhasidat’s talent has raised the bar (and kudos to Sharlen Mawdsley who won 2 medals as well -and the delightful Ciara Mageen on her gold) Rashidat is a superstar in the making.   However, some people don’t like Rhasidat, She tends to being the insecure racists out. Sadly this is something on the rise here in Ireland, like everywhere else. The anger being directed at the people who don’t ‘look like us’ – as opposed to bad governance over years and years that has allowed the problems of housing (and more) become so stark.   We forget too easily the Irish left these shores and populated Britian, America, Australia and Canada for hundreds of years, in search of an opportunity to live a life. One of our most beloved sportsmen was Paul McGrath, a man also of African decent And who can forget the musical genius of Dublin’s Phil Lynott.   So in deleting my comment I let others down. The racists have to be challenged. The homophobes need to be called out. Intolerance is not welcome in our society   And the challenge needs to be put to them to highlight this. And so that the people being victimised know they are supported. Know that the racist opinions are in the minority, And not representative of the country.   Ok far from my usual content but an important topic.   This post may bring the racists out – if so – expect to be challenged.   #racist #racists #Adeleke #Rashidatadeleke #Europeanchampionships #opinion
