I call it the CHEATS Act because its backers are trying to steal American elections -- specifically, Prop 12 and Question 3 that were settled by voters by landslide margins in favor of giving domesticated animals, especially pigs and laying hens, even a little space to move. But some Republican Agriculture Committee leaders, working with China's Smithfield Foods, want to gut states' rights and give the Chinese-owned Smithfield Foods an opportunity to bring high-rise factory farms, now the rage in China, to the American heartland. Cage-free housing may offer hens better lives. How do egg suppliers in China promote eggs produced in cage-free systems? In this new research from the AWP, Maria Chen, Julia Lee, Nick Yuchen Liu, and Daniel Weary used multi-case study design to understand the experiences of 10 suppliers using cage-free housing. Suppliers considered 3 main egg attributes when promoting eggs to consumer and business buyers: 1. Price, engaging buyers who were willing to pay 2. Experiential attributes such as taste, ensuring eggs gives buyers positive experience 3. The adage “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you’ll feed him for a lifetime” is a guided principle I adhere to, when working with local inland fish farmers throughout PNG. I’ve been fortunate to see the progress a fish farmer makes when the lessons learnt are diligently applied. The video demonstrates an aspect of broodstock management, whereby a farmer skilfully ‘sexes’ a matured fish i.e separates males from females in preparation for egg production and collection. There was a farmer who grew excellent quality corn. Every year he won the award for the best grown corn. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. “How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?” the reporter asked. “Why sir,” said the farmer, “Didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn.” So is with our lives... Those who want to live meaningfully and well must help enrich the lives of others, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches.
