This July 4th, let's keep celebrations safe and injury-free! Every year, ERs see injuries from mishandled firecrackers and sparklers. Remember, leave the fireworks to the experts and follow safety guidelines. Check out some safety tips below: 🔵 Legal Compliance: Only use fireworks that are legal in your area. Follow all local laws and regulations. Adult Supervision: Always have a responsible adult supervise all fireworks activities. Never allow children to handle fireworks. 🔵 Safe Distance: Keep spectators at a safe distance from the launch area. 🔵 Hold with Care: Never hold a firecracker or firework in your hand. Use a lighter with a long reach to maintain a safe distance. 🔵 Read Instructions: Carefully read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for each firework. 🔵 Clear Area: Use fireworks in a clear, open area away from buildings, vehicles, dry grass, and other flammable materials. 🔵 Fire Extinguisher: Have a bucket of water, hose, or fire extinguisher nearby in case of an emergency. 🔵 No Alterations: Never attempt to alter or combine fireworks. Use them exactly as intended by the manufacturer. 🔵 No Alcohol or Substances: Avoid using fireworks if you are under the influence of alcohol or other substances. 🔵 Wear Eye Protection: Consider wearing safety glasses to protect your eyes from sparks and debris. 🔵 Alternatives: Consider safer alternatives to sparklers for children, such as glow sticks, confetti poppers or colored streamers. 🔵 Protect Pets: Keep pets indoors and away from fireworks. Every year, the emergency departments throughout Mass General Brigham see multiple patients who have sustained significant burns at #4thOfJuly celebrations. These burns produce life-long disfigurement, including devastating hand injuries caused by fireworks that explode in the hands of children and adults. Alberto Perez MD FACEP FACMT, chair and medical director of Emergency Medicine at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, offers these tips to keeping celebrations safe this holiday weekend: •Using explosives is inherently dangerous, particularly around children. It's crucial to educate your children about the dangers and restrict their access. •Avoid alcohol and drugs when operating fireworks. •Projectiles such as “bottle rockets” or “Roman candles,” are especially dangerous, placing the user at risk as well as endangering bystanders. •Light fireworks one at a time with safety goggles and without placing any part of your body directly over it, then move back a safe distance quickly. •Never carry fireworks in a pocket, shoot them off in containers, or point fireworks at another person. •Do not re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully. •After fireworks complete their burning, douse the device with water before discarding and keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire. “Fireworks are not toys. They are explosives that make noise, produce light or both. Fireworks are dangerous and can cause serious burns and injuries, particularly to a person’s hands and fingers, face, ears and eyes,” explains Dr. Perez. “Some combustibles have the explosive power of military weapons and the results of use by amateurs can be catastrophic. We strongly recommend against personal use of fireworks, but if you do, please keep the safety of yourself and your loved ones, especially children, at the forefront.” #FireworkSafety
