People are not getting better and executive management with some healthcare systems are missing the mark in financial decisions. This lack of better decision making is costing communities to loss healthcare. St. Louis’s South City Hospital, Martin General Hospital in Williamston, North Carolina, and Health Kelsey Hospital in Lakeview, Michigan announced their closures within one week of each other. The challenges they faced were financial, declining admissions, and aging infrastructures. Several hospitals are expanding their brick-and-mortar presence to expand their services and volume. Some of the hospitals which held off on capital improvements during covid have been at full capacity. It is a sad testament to the state of healthcare in New Yorks State that there are more F rates facilities in New York than anywhere else, and New York does not boast one single A rated facility. I fear the situation will only worsen especially with recent reports that there are more rural hospitals at risk of closure in New York than any other state. Today, U.S. News & World Report presented its first-ever list of the “Best Regional Hospitals for Equitable Access” at The State of Equity in America meeting in Washington, DC. As the “global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice,” US News' analysis revealed 53 hospitals across 26 states serving socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. Recognition was granted to the institutions that excelled in providing access to high-caliber care, resulting in exceptional patient outcomes. California ranked highest in number of hospitals that made the cut, with 7 recognized institutions, followed by 4 in North Carolina and 3 in Arizona, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, and South Carolina. Honing in on US cities with more than 1 hospital included, Baltimore, Detroit, St Louis, Tucson, and Tulsa each had 2 institutions listed. NHS Confederation chief executive Matthew Taylor responds to the new research by the Liberal Democrats on NHS hospital buildings: “With no further capital funding announced in the spring budget above what was already announced in the autumn statement, we fear that the deterioration of the NHS estate will continue. For the NHS to make the productivity and efficiency improvements needed to tackle the waiting list backlogs and recover performance, as well as ensuring that buildings are kept safe for staff and patients, it needs the right investment. This includes longer funding settlements so leaders can plan for the future, and a step away from short term thinking.
