The 2023 theme for International Volunteer Day is “The Power of Collective Action.” The aim is to encourage more people to donate their time to a cause that they believe in and help improve the lives of others. Many non-profits and charities have great causes, but struggle with implementing their ideas because they cannot afford to hire too many paid staff, if any at all. This is where volunteers can have a significant impact. Unfortunately, recruiting volunteers is challenging for many of these organizations. This is not because people are too self absorbed to give of their time, but because their efforts are not recognized by Canadian employers as “real experience,” even though it is the same exact skills and knowledge that are used for paid work. Therefore the call is being made on this day for Canadian employers to respect volunteers, recognize their qualifications as equitable, hire them and watch them transform your organization. They have a lot of experience and ideas on solving problems and if they are willing to put in the work for free, imagine what they would do when they are paid. Volunteer experience counts. Volunteers matter. #IVD #recognizevolunteerwork #hirevolunteers

Trade Relations Manager @ Bench Africa || Experienced Sales Leader, Account management, Partner Relations & All-round Team Player! ||
RESPONSIBLE GIVING IN AFRICA At Bench Africa, we’re often asked by clients and travel agents what they can take to Africa to improve the lives of those in need and to make a positive impact on the local communities they will visit. We tend to think about packing pencils and notebooks, or toothpaste and toothbrushes. As I learnt last year in Zambia from Mfuwe Lodge Guest Manager, the quantities required to ‘do good’ are generally more than the packing space we have available in our luggage. We can in fact create other issues if, for example, we don’t carry enough pencils to go around a class of school children. This is where the incredible Pack for a Purpose initiative comes in, connecting travellers with specific requirements identified by local projects. Their website provides a platform for our African travel partners to list required items and guidelines for responsible giving, from stationery supplies and sports items, to linens and sanitary products. Travellers then simply drop off the supplies at the participating accommodation where they will stay, and the donated goods are distributed when there is enough to satisfy the project’s needs. Visit their website now and share with any clients booked to visit Africa soon. A small act of generosity can make a significant difference.

😎☀️Summer is coming, and we are already planning our youth activities and camps for #OurCommunity ! Need to meet engagement requirements for your company but don’t know where to start? Here are some tips. 👉 Grab a list of non-profits from your local Chamber of Commerce or United Way. Non-profits listed in these types of directories are integral parts of the local business world and the community. It makes for great optics! 👉Find out what times of year are best for engagement as a company. It’s difficult to volunteer in the middle of peak season. (Maybe opt for a donation instead.) 👉Survey your team members with a list of volunteer opportunities to see what they are interested in. 👉Work with your team leaders and HR to see if engagement can be done in-house. Ex: Facility Tours or a Day in the Life Activities. 👉If not, tether to projects or see how your company can contribute to existing programs. Ex: Dothan Housing Authorities summer youth camps or feeding programs. 👉Can’t do any of the above? Share information on opportunities through your company email and incentivize employees who volunteer or contribute locally. 💙Employees involved in the community, wearing company gear or representing your company by name, attract new business opportunities, create brand awareness, strengthen team dynamics, and potentially create a “great place to work” buzz. Companies who give back to their communities by implementing stakeholder capitalism ideals ultimately make a greater economic impact than companies who do not. This can be done on ANY level be it Fortune 500 or local Mom & Pop. Either way, we hope you consider your local housing authority as a recipient of your volunteer and donor spirit. 😁

Turning fundraising strategy into action | Public Fundraising | Supporter Experience | Projects | Products | Facilitation | Hosting
After stumbling off a plane in Bristol not-so-fresh from a festive weekend in Berlin I found myself the following day in Birmingham bright-eyed and bushy-tailed delivering an all-day session with the Supporter Led Fundraising team at RNIB. What was REALLY special about this session (brightly coloured Sharpies and neon post-it-notes aside) was the super duper engagement of senior members of key teams from across the organisation on the day. Together we planned collaboratively, and ensured that the department's plans for new supporter journeys were both fantastic and realistic. A great public fundraising programme will acquire and cultivate thousands of engaged supporters a year, all of whom could go on to provide support and advocacy for a lifetime. It's a vital artery that feeds the powerful limbs of individual giving and legacy. To be able to do that, our events and community teams need the support of their internal enablers. So often we all bounce along to an away day, produce some great stuff, only to see it stall when our colleagues in other teams are unable to prioritise it. To succeed, internal stakeholder engagement needs to be awesome. Our colleagues need us to help them to be able to prioritise our objectives. That starts with involving them in our planning processes from the very start. As you can see, if you do this well they will be more than happy to jump on your journey with you. It's also energising for a team to see visibly the support that they have outside the department. I have very high hopes from what the team will be able to achieve thanks to long-term commitment and support from their colleagues. #united #stakeholders #fundraising #awayday #supporterjourney #collaborativeplanning #facilitation _________ Picture shows a boardroom table is littered with post-it-notes, brightly coloured sharpie pens, laptops and cups. In the foreground a laptop screen is partly in-shot showing a Powerpoint slide with the RNIB branding and the words "Supporter Journey". Small groups of people are standing in the background deep in discussion and sticking post-it notes to the wall.
