Sierra Brown and I met this summer when she stopped by our booth at Surf Industry Members Association (SIMA) Surfscape event to share a little bit about her new organization, Changing Current. McKenzie Wilson and I were immediately impressed with the concept and Sierra’s energy, and I knew I had to talk with her to hear more from her perspective. Sierra and her other co-founder Michael DeShields, believe that travel and surfing can be powerful tools for personal growth, cultural exchange, and community building, and therefore, have a vision of a more equitable and inclusive surfing culture that starts with access to surf travel for all people of color. While the mission of Changing Current intrigued me and was one I wanted to highlight and promote, Sierra’s journey as a surfer was what I really wanted to learn more about. While we’re both surfers, our experiences have been very different. This conversation was a little dissimilar from the recent episodes I’ve done with CEOs, Founders, and industry leaders, namely because Sierra is still new to all of this - and as she admits, she’s still just trying to figure it all out (aren’t we all!?)! But that was the beauty of this talk; Sierra’s perspective was fresh, and I knew there was a lot for me to learn. If you appreciate stories of career journeys, non-profit impact, community-building, diversity & inclusion, self-discovery, finding purpose, and dealing with the roadblocks life sometimes puts in our way, dive in. While she might not admit it, I believe Sierra is wise beyond her years. 487 Steps straight up. Do you do it? Last week my wife and I had a wonderful trip to Quebec City for our anniversary. On Thursday we took a trip to Montmorency Falls. They came highly recommended but when we arrived, we learned that the lift that takes you to the top of the falls was out of order. We faced a choice: A) Admire the view from below, or B) Conquer 487 steps to the summit We chose the climb—and wow, was it worth it. The view from the top? Absolutely breathtaking. But beyond the view, this experience was a powerful reminder: We can do hard things. Lesson 1: The regrets that stick with us are often about what we didn’t do, not what we did. Lesson 2: The toughest part of any journey is taking that first step. So, just start.
