This #MensHealthWeek we want to talk about talking – or the lack of 🤐 A survey conducted by Priory found that 40% of men won’t talk to anyone about their mental health. And with the same survey showing 77% have suffered with symptoms of common mental health conditions, that’s a lot of men who aren’t getting the support they need. Walk the talk As part of the Mental Health Week initiative, HR encouraged all staff in the region (if possible) to take a short walk together with the local team, taking the opportunity to get some fresh air, stretch their legs and briefly discuss how we together contribute to a great working environment Some staff that were not able to walk together with others, found a “Walk the talk partner”, that they called during the walk. The benefits of a “Walk the talk”, are many: 1. An opportunity to get some fresh air, stretch your legs and discuss things in a less formal setting. 2. Easier to engage people in the chat, without the feeling of one-way information classroom style. 3. I´m not sure why, but don´t you agree that we get a bit more creative and collaborative whilst walking? Next to the fruitful discussions, I´m sure that all the “walkers” brought back some extra energy to the workplace. Mental health programs = top employer priority, and here's how: 🔹 Mental health is the #1 clinical area targeted to improve health 🔹 Companies are doing mental health parity audits to ensure appropriate benefits 🔹 The majority of companies are training managers in identifying MH needs 🔹 A growing number of companies are evaluating network for diverse representation (shoutout to Violet!) Ever since my involvement in the ThriveNYC's Toolkit for Employers 📔 and Made of Millions Foundation's Made Academy 🎓 a number of years ago, I've been waiting for companies to finally get *serious* about supporting their employees' mental health. (Check out tomorrow' post on why I stopped doing employee wellness workshops.) A workplace can be a protective factor for mental health as much as it can be a risk factor.
