🤔 Do you know the real cost of navigating your education without a guiding hand or a supportive community by your side? 💯 Missed chances to learn faster, 💯 Lack of insights from experienced mentors to help you get ahead easier, and 💯 Limited professional connections that open doors 💯 Lost opportunities to start securing a PT job BEFORE you graduate, and more. 👉 We don’t blame you. You are taught to ‘figure it alone’ and ‘be a know-it-all hero’... That’s what healthcare ‘heroes’ are supposed to do after all, right? ❌ WRONG. Until it’s exam time or time to land your first job - not leveraging the experience and wisdom of other, more experienced, seasoned professionals is costing you time and pay. 📌 Navigating your healthcare education alone will continue to breed uncertainty and missed opportunities. __________ 💯 Ready to leverage the power of support and accountability? Working with senior hospital clinicians to help them prevent burnout so that they can rediscover balance and joy at work.
Another week and another report. The most recent GMC workforce report makes for interesting reading as we consider what our future careers in the NHS and UK might look like. Headlines: 1)Training career paths are now less rigid an not as linear 2) More nuanced experiences during training can benefit the doctor AND the healthcare system. The report highlights that not only does time away from formal training improve CV building and confirm career or specialty choices. It also improves the doctors' health and wellbeing. Crucially the report claims this 'time away' does NOT necessarily convert into permanently leaving the NHS. How refreshing! Doctors in training being supported and recognising the value of crafting their careers from early on. 'Time out' allows pursuing academic work, travel, passion projects, or simply recharging. I would love to see the same focus on the senior clinicians who will be responsible for delivering their training, nurturing and the increasing burden of patient care. The analysis showed career breaks can improve skills, resilience, and enthusiasm for medicine. As senior clinicians, have we given ourselves permission for similar opportunities? Could sabbaticals, job rotations, or secondments help us gain new perspectives, passion and skills? Renewing through time off need not always have to mean stepping away entirely. Short courses, teaching stints, policy projects, or research could let us tap into different interests. Just as trainees return to training reinvigorated, time out can potentially help senior doctors rediscover the joy in medicine, ultimately benefiting our patients. I encourage us all to reflect on what would make our careers more satisfying and discuss creative solutions with colleagues and managers. Sometimes a change of scene is the spark we need to thrive again in clinical work. The GMC report is a reminder that time outs should be seen as investments in personal growth, not disruptions. At all stages of our career, it is crucial we advocate for flexibility when needed. It is the three R's: Rethink Reset Retain https://lnkd.in/eUzfSCBu
