The consequences of implicit bias in healthcare are significant, contributing to racial health disparities and impacting treatment recommendations and health outcomes. Despite efforts to address implicit bias through training and education, eliminating it remains challenging due to its unconscious nature. NRC Health's own Chief Transformation Officer, Gregory Makoul, worked with a group of researchers, educators, and healthcare professionals to author the Glasgow Consensus Statement, a framework for patient communication in #healthcare. Take a few minutes to read the paper for yourself, what struck me is how overwhelmingly effective this is if we simply start looking at patients as individuals instead of a diagnosis. #patientexperience In your next patient encounter, try to do the following: 🔌 Connect as humans. #humanconnection is a pathway to therapeutic, trusting relationships, whether episodic or sustained over time, and there is good evidence that human connection has benefits for patients and health professionals. 👓Understand the patient’s perspective. Explore ideas, beliefs, feelings, expectations and/or preferences to an extent relevant and proportionate to the moment and incorporate this knowledge when shaping a care plan with the patient. 📞Be responsive. Meeting the needs of each patient in the context of their life and clinical situation is at the heart of delivering person-centered care. As there is no ‘one size fits all’ model of an effective encounter, it is important to develop a repertoire of skills and strategies that can be applied as needed to accomplish essential tasks.

Research Funding: Allocate funding specifically for studies focused on gender-specific health issues to encourage more research in this area. 3.Training and Education : Provide training to healthcare professionals on the importance of collecting gender-specific data and addressing gender biases in medical research. 4.Public Awareness Campaigns : Launch campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of gender-specific healthcare data and its impact on medical research and treatment outcomes. To reduce the dismissal of women's medical concerns, policies could include: 1.Implicit Bias Training : Mandate healthcare providers to undergo training to recognize and address implicit biases that may lead to dismissing women's medical concerns. 2.Patient Advocacy Programs : Establish programs to empower patients, particularly women, to advocate for themselves in healthcare settings and ensure their concerns are taken seriously. 3.Diverse Representation in Clinical Trials : Encourage the inclusion of diverse populations, including women, in clinical trials to ensure that medical research reflects the needs of all patients. 4. Policy Changes : Implement policies that require healthcare providers to thoroughly investigate and address women's medical concerns, regardless of perceived severity or bias. By implementing these strategies and policies, healthcare systems can work towards addressing the gender disparities in healthcare data and improving the quality of care for all patients, regardless of gender.
