Recent advances in AI have given hope that this technology can help the NHS tackle current challenges and improve healthcare services in the long term. However, despite ongoing AI projects within the NHS, government, and other organisations, the efforts to use AI in healthcare are held back because there is no clear plan and not enough coordination among everyone involved. This is a really interesting read about the need for a more focussed and strategic approach to integrating AI in health care. I think we can all agree that AI will play an important role in the NHS; but what that role is and how it will be scaled, still seems quite hypothetical. Harnessing AI for the NHS: The Need for a Comprehensive Strategy Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) offer significant potential to help the NHS tackle current pressures and drive long-term service transformation. However, the lack of an overarching strategy and coordination among various actors is hindering progress. The government and NHS leaders must develop a dedicated AI strategy to capitalize on these opportunities. Given the escalating demand and significant workforce shortages, a strategy is urgently needed to ensure AI benefits are realized across the NHS. This includes meaningful public and staff engagement, effective priority setting, robust data and digital infrastructure, high-quality testing and evaluation, clear regulation, and the right workforce skills. An AI strategy in healthcare must be guided by responsibility to ensure it is legal, ethical, and beneficial for society. A renewed approach with responsibility at its core is essential. 53% of respondents believe generative AI could improve access to healthcare, and almost half (46%) said it had the potential to make healthcare more affordable, according to Deloitte’s 2023 Health Care Consumer Survey. The survey of 2,014 US adults also found that, of those who have used generative AI, 70% thought the technology could revolutionise care delivery. Respondents' reasons for using generative AI for health and wellness include learning about medical conditions (19%); understanding treatment options (16%); deciphering technical language (15%); and improving well-being (15%). Four out of five respondents felt that it is 'important' or 'extremely important' for their healthcare provider to inform them when generative AI is being used for their health needs. Responsible AI is one of the ingredients in the AI phenomenon as we enter into the age of Machine and human collaboration and augmentation for us to lead the world

AI holds tremendous potential for #healthcare — to improve diagnostics and support the decisions doctors make. But for me, what’s more exciting is the opportunity to use #AI to tackle administrative tasks and leave more time for humans to connect with humans.   Of course, all of this potential is predicated on AI being used ethically and responsibly, especially when lives and wellbeing are on the line. New consumer study from Deloitte Consulting highlights interest in the use of generative AI in healthcare to address the critical issues the industry faces (e.g. access, staffing shortages, burnout, affordability, etc). Really excellent long read here from The Health Foundation on the priorities for an AI health strategy. In the AI policy space, the King's Speech earlier this week indicated that Labour will focus on the most powerful AI models and impose certain requirements on developers. This is unsurprising and quite sensible to ensure that the most cutting-edge AI developments are properly managed. However, my personal pet concern in healthcare AI—something I wrote about during my time at PPP and that the experts at the Health Foundation also touch on in this article—is not just about developers, but about adopters. There's an ongoing debate about whether regulation will stifle innovation, but innovations are of little use if people and systems don't adopt the AI in the first place. For the NHS, an overarching AI strategy and framework is essential. Clinicians—not to mention patients—won't be comfortable with AI in care settings unless there are proper safeguards to ensure patient safety and clinical liability. Regulation should not be seen as a burden solely for innovators; it also reassures adopters about the direction of travel. Clear and consistent AI regulation, understood similarly across institutions and governance boards in the health system, will be crucial if the NHS is to become a modernized healthcare system using the latest technology.
