Childhood obesity is a serious and growing problem in the United States. This trend has also been linked to increasing cases of diabetes among children. A 2021 study by Puhl et al looked at adults with larger bodies and asked them whether they had experienced weight stigma.   Over half of them stated they’d experienced weight stigma, and two-thirds said it came from their doctors.    Why is weight stigma from healthcare professionals harmful?   It alienates parents and children from seeking medical care when, and if, they need it.  If you’re not sure about weight stigma - what it is, how it harms, and where it lurks - and even if you may be unknowingly participating in it… I encourage you to learn more.  A great place to start is understanding implicit #bias. @HarvardUniversity has Project Implicit - a bank of tests to assess implicit bias - there’s one on #weightbias - check it out! #parentingtips #PediatricNutrition

Project Lyme was grateful to have the opportunity to join the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs from Australia for a meeting on tick-borne diseases at the Australian Consulate in New York! Australia faces a lot of the same issues as the United States does when it comes to Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses: — Lack of awareness about the prevalence of tick-borne diseases, how to prevent tick bites, and how to remove ticks — Lack of adequate education for patients and providers on how to recognize common symptoms and consider tick-borne diseases as a possible cause of multisystemic issues — The inaccuracy and insensitivity of current standard tests Project Lyme is proud to be considered an international expert on the subject of tick-borne disease and will continue to work with the Australian Standing Senate Committee to develop a report for their Health Department. According to the CDC, it's estimated that around 1 in 5 school-aged children (ages 6-19) in the USA are obese. According to The Gulf Obesity Surgery Society (GOSS), the numbers are similarly alarming in the (GCC) countries. The rise in childhood obesity has paralleled the increase in Type 2 Diabetes cases among youth. This condition is now impacting children at an alarming rate. But here's the thing: obesity isn't just about lifestyle choices. It can be influenced by other factors too, including genetic factors. Also, stigmatizing children or treating them like it's their fault only adds to their struggles. Instead, we need to provide the right support and resources for children and families. While it is important prioritize education on healthy eating habits and regular exercise, in many cases these lifestyle changes won't be enough. Encouraging families to seek professional medical and psychological support is essential. Every child deserves access to compassionate care and treatment tailored to their needs.
