Fractional CMO | Scale profitably with a customer-centric marketing strategy | Focus on What Matters
As a newly hired marketing leader, you know the least in the room. That's a benefit and a curse! Curse: You have a lot of learning to do quickly Benefit: You'll see things and ask questions no one internally asks or sees. Here's my rough priorities when I start an fCMO engagement: 1. Agree on the business goals and the role of marketing within them 2. Broad audit of ALL marketing and sales processes (with CRM data) 3. Understand product and brand PoV 4. Analyze current best-fit customers/deals 5. Analyze current pipeline (onboarding, marketing -> sales hand-off, etc) 6. Analyze current marketing strategy and plan 7. Build a current reality marketing ecosystem map 8. Minimize wasted budget and time spent on misaligned activities 9. Make a short and long term plan based on visualized opportunities Be humble, be curious, ask questions and seek alignment. Then go be a rock star and create marketing impact. #marketingstrategy

My guess is a lot of first time Head of Marketing roles don’t succeed because they can’t conceive a wholistic strategy to move the business forward. There are a lot of great individual marketers out there who excel in a function. They know the ins and outs of how to do various marketing tactics. And when given a goal or direction they can execute on it proficiently. But it’s a lot different when you are the one steering the ship. Translating a marketing plan to a business strategy requires more business knowledge than it does marketing skill. Why do you think first time Head of Marketing roles struggle? #b2bmarketing

Marketing managers are often slowed down by the management 🙅♀️ We work with outstanding marketing managers - whether in start-ups, scale-ups or large companies. Size has nothing to do with the problem. These people are excellent at their job. BUT: they are often slowed down. It starts with the fact that they are not involved in strategic decisions and are often the last to find out about them - and are then simply expected to "make something great out of it". Unfortunately, marketing managers have the job in the company where everyone suddenly thinks they can get involved. The wildest ideas and opinions fly in from all sides - without any professional basis. Imagine if the marketing manager suddenly started talking the controller into it. Pretty cheeky, isn't it? Marketing managers often have to have their decisions double-checked by the management. Especially when it comes to the budget, short-term goals are to be achieved - but marketing and brand building in particular is something long-term. In the worst-case scenario, the marketing manager also has to cover sales. And communication. And HR. Everything for which there is no one else. That's why I appeal to you: let your marketing department do its thing and see what happens. Great things will come out of it! What do you think? How can marketing managers strengthen their position? P.S. Picture created with DALL-E, what do you think of the tree? 😂 #Marketing #PR #Agency #Communications #CMO #MarketingManager

Fractional CMO | Scale profitably with a customer-centric marketing strategy | Focus on What Matters
As a newly hired marketing leader, you know the least in the room. Step one is listening, not action. You may see opportunities you believe are a slam dunk, but you don't know the context they are/were in when they set it up. Here's how to not put your foot in your mouth: 1. Understand what the business is ultimately trying to accomplish WHY are you here? Clearly align on the root problem you were brought in to solve. 2. Understand the systems as they are today WHAT is the context you are stepping into? There's a reason the website, sales process, ad structure, creative etc. are set up the way they are. Understand it before you make large changes 3. Agree on the solution before taking action There will be time to fire-from-the-hip later. The first real action step should be agreed upon by key stakeholders to build trust and rapport. Ensure they understand and agree on: - What success looks like - Expectations of them (the leader) and the rest of the team - Timelines - Resources need (time, skills, budget) - KPIs to show the plan is working and we're on track. #marketingstrategy
