Happy Sea Turtle Week! 🐢💙 Let's celebrate these amazing creatures and pledge to protect their habitats so we can enjoy nature alongside them. Here are five small ways you can save sea turtles: ➡️Let's ditch those single-use plastics like straws, bags, and bottles. They're causing a lot of trouble for our underwater friends. ➡️Keep our beaches clean and cozy by disposing of trash properly and joining in on beach cleanups. ➡️During nesting season, dim those lights near beaches to prevent hatchlings from getting disoriented. ➡️Respect marked turtle nesting sites and keep a safe distance to avoid disturbing them. ➡️Feeling passionate about sea turtle conservation? Share your commitment to protecting sea turtles using #ProtectOurOceans in the comments, or share with someone who loves the ocean, the planet, and its habitats. Together, we can create a brighter future for our oceans and the incredible creatures that call them home. 🐢💙 #SeaTurtleWeek #ConservationUK #MarineLife #ProtectOurOceans #Haloholidays

Nesting season has begun! 🐢 A green sea turtle laid this nest at the end of March. The earliest nesting activity we have seen since we began our Nest Monitoring Program in 2020! If you find sea turtle tracks on the beach, report it to our Sea Turtle Hotline at 080-5537-9991🤙🏻 #seaturtle #oki #okisummer #seaturtleconservation #seatietlenesting #savetheturtles #conservation #conservationeducation

Did you know that seaweed is crucial for the survival of baby sea turtles?😲 Once sea turtle hatchlings leave their nest and swim out to the open ocean, they find floating mats of sargassum - big brown seaweed - to take cover in. This becomes their primary habitat in the open sea. 🌊 Here they will spend at least a year, feeding on bite-sized prey and evading predators like crabs and seagulls. However, these floating sargassum mats are affected by ocean debris, and one can often spot plastic in the seaweed mats. 😔 This can be very dangerous to baby sea turtles and other marine life taking shelter in the sargassum, as they can get entangled in the plastic debris or even ingest it. The turtle in the picture is ‘Hope’ - a baby olive ridley who was found entangled in plastic on a seaweed mat. She had a few injuries and a swollen flipper from the entanglement which we treated her for. She was released after a month long stay at the Rescue Centre. 💚 Hope’s story goes to show how plastic affects sea turtles of all ages and their habitats - from sargassum, coral reefs, seagrass beds to beaches. If we want to protect sea turtles, we have to protect their habitats - including floating sargassum (seaweed). 🌿🌿 #WorldSeaweedDay

The state of the Baltic Sea is deteriorating and euthropication is affecting the waters from the Finnish Gulf to the Bay of Bothnia. In October 1995, on a dive site along the west coast of Finland, we still witnessed plenty of marine life and found the visibility to be good, given our latitude. In August 2016, diving in the same location, we noticed a remarkable change to worse. No fish and the visibility cut to about 30 % from the previous visit. Now, in October 2023, we visited the same spot for the third time to see whether the difference had been due to an exceptionally warm summer and increase in blue algae, or had the change become permanent. Well, unfortunately the condition had not improved and albeit lower bottom temperature, the visibility was poor, not a single fish around, except for an occasional jelly-fish floating around for a slight consolation. From a diver's point of view, while the Baltic Sea offers some of the finest historic wooden wrecks to explore due to low salinity and lack of teredo worms, the waters are fairly free of overboard thrown trash and the beaches are generally clean, but what the oxygen depletion is causing to the ocean floor and it's ecosystem, is a concern. The concerns with the ocean are naturally global and the issues vary from coral bleaching and microplastics to supporting the biodiversity of marine life, but while scratching the surface reveals only a partial view, going below opens up a wider perspective into the cause and effect. There are plenty of organisations, both non-profit and profit, often focused on a specific issue or a geographical area, yet all concerned with the same concern, saving the ocean. Choose one. Turtle trivia time! Today is World Turtle Day, an annual observance to raise awareness around the conservation of turtles. To celebrate these charming sea creatures, we thought we’d test your turtle knowledge. Comment and let us know how many of these interesting facts you already knew! 1. Historic creatures Did you know that turtles have been around for over 100 million years? Today there are seven species of sea turtles – the flatback turtle, green sea turtle, leatherback turtle, hawksbill turtle, loggerhead turtles, olive ridley turtle and the Kemp’s ridley turtle. 2. Hot or cold The temperature of the sand where turtles lay their eggs helps determine the gender of the hatchlings. Warmer sand usually produces more female hatchlings, while cooler sand produces more males. 3. Take a deep breath Sea turtles can hold their breath underwater for several hours, depending on how active they are. This is especially helpful when they are sleeping. In cold water during winter, some turtles can hold their breath for up to seven hours. 4. Built-in GPS Turtles have an incredible sense of direction. They use the Earth’s magnetic field as their very own GPS, finding their way back to beaches where they were born, to lay their own eggs. 5. Volunteer with turtles Did you know that you can play your part in the conservation of sea turtles by joining an ethical conservation program? At GVI, we’ve got turtle and marine conservation programs in Costa Rica, Greece, Malaysia, Maldives, Mexico, Nicaragua and Seychelles. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/d-qnjYgx By reducing the impact we have on our oceans and supporting ethical turtle conservation efforts, we can ensure these sea creatures thrive for a million more years. #seaturtles #worldturtleday #turtleconservation #savetheturtles #marineconservation

Majestic and magical, the Galápagos green turtle is the only one to breed and nest in the archipelago. I was lucky to be able to witness this beautiful turtle swimming calmly in the tropical waters around the Galápagos, possibly before it heads to shore to bask in the sun. Yet this species of turtle is endangered, as their habitat is under threat, and like other sea turtles, they can become caught in fishing nets or plastic waste. Listing on CITES, which is the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, has made the trade in wild-caught specimens of this turtle illegal, and the marine protected areas (MPAs) around the islands also helps protect their habitat. Creating safe havens for such wonderful sea creatures can help restore where they live, and protect them from human activities like fishing – and the benefits are multiplied when MPAs are connected, in what are called underwater 'swimways', like the one between Ecuador's Galápagos Islands and Costa Rica's Cocos Island. World Sea Turtle Day yesterday was a reminder to me of how wonderful these creatures are. Protecting marine species like the turtle is one of the many reasons I work through #PewBertarelliOceanLegacy to protect marine habitats through MPAs. #WorldSeaTurtleDay #SeaTurtle #Ecosystems #Biodiversity #Protect #Nature #30x30 #Sustainability #Ocean #OurOcean #OceanProtect #MarineProtection #Galapagos #Cocosisland #ETP #Connectivity
