William R. G. thanks for sharing. I am incredibly grateful that these conversations are taking place in safe forums. This speaker does an exceptional job of verbalising some of the consequences. It brings understanding to the conversation and the complexity of the issues. I am hopeful that the conversation will continue to evolve as we pursue reconciliation as a nation. I am encouraged that we are beginning to articulate one dimension of the conversation in a way that cultivates understanding. The pendulum is swinging to one side and should do so fully. True reconciliation will require it to then swing fully the other way, to bring understanding to the full spectrum of lived experience. The predominant narrative at present is laced with a villain, victim, victor framework albeit subconsciously. In such cases, reconciliation will likely be shallow as history will be written by the victor, thereby the same injustice is perpetrated on the perpetrator since the narrative ultimately ends up villainising it as an unintended consequence. J. Warner Wallace is a cold case detective who developed a brilliant model to understand old cases. He uses a fuse-event-fallout model. In cold cases like these, the fuse is much longer than we give credit for. We are now gaining an understanding of the complexities of the fallout. This is right and just and imperative. True reconciliation requires that we also gain deep insight and understanding of the fuse. This requires immense maturity on the part of the 'victim' because they will need to humanise the 'villain'. What we are bound to discover is that we are all alike, and given the same situation all members of the human race are likely to act in a similar manner. There is a significant body of knowledge in sociology and psychology to support this. This doesn't negate the fallout, or reduce its significance. It offers mutual respect and understanding that forms a foundation for collective restoration without undermining the worth, dignity or moral standing of any group, race, or culture. May we continue to pursue understanding in a way that is known for mutual respect and affirmation of dignity. The world needs examples of mature discourse. What better nation to provide it?

And that idea is the very first thing not to accept.   And it’s super hard not to.    Welcome. Here are some things that you never wanted to know about being here. Applying through a job board is the equivalent of playing the lottery. Whether you get an interview has more to do with formatting and keywords than how brilliant you are. Don’t compare your life to the glory posts of others.  There’s a huge amount of well-deserved showboating here.  Everyone is justifiably proud of being on an awards show jury. Everyone joyously shows off the great new things they made.  Everyone high-fives about winning.   Which is great. Except it's not you. And Jimmy cracked corn.  Try to remember that no one's life is as splendid as everyone else's press releases. Being here means that you’re part of something. It's not just a shitbox of self-promotion and desperation. It's your shitbox of whatever you want and need it to be. If you make an effort to make it better. It will be better to you. Be honest. Too few people embrace how much it can suck to be here.  Everyone here is heartbroken. Or had their hearts broken. And despite all that, the lot of us are hugely unreliable pessimists.  We all want to be dispirited cynics, but we can't. We dream too fucking hard. And lastly, you’re in good company. The power of the hat One of the funniest things I have done is worn a hat everywhere, all the time. There are people that have never seen my hair. Some assume I am bald. They never see the gray flat top! That hat takes 30 years off my age! Sometimes I forget this and when I talk my age, people act rather strange! Some will tell me, "When I was your age...". I will stop them and ask them how old they are. They are usually 10–15 years younger than me! Some think I am joking and others are confused. I used to cut my hair short to hide the gray, but the hat works all the time, unless teenagers are around. Ever notice how a teenager has better judgement skills than anyone older? Many times, I will forget that people can't read my age, so when I am talking about work experiences that get lost. It is something when talking about working with music stars that died during the 1990's, and people can't relate as that was before their time. I was talking to a 7th grader last week about careers. She wanted to know about college, so I told her the truth. You will study too much stuff that you will never use. She looked as if she could relate. I told her about the career. I got a degree in engineering and went to work for Warner Bros. Records Nashville. At which point, she looked at me and asked, How? I explained the career as pure chaos! A job isn't a one to one thing for a degree to a job, for example, look at HR and no one offers a degree in HR. Then I talked about AOL buying our Warner Bros. and having to find another job. I got a job at an engineering company and started training, only to be given reports to write for the CEO. Suddenly, I was in a job that had no end and those that wanted to manage me, needed to be VP or higher. This story is set to cause kids to dream. We want kids to dream big and know they can be more than what the local culture says they are. Your influence is bigger than you understand. No matter what you look like, be aware that you can encourage others to dream big. #publicfigure #influence
