✨ Happy Black History Month! ✨ Black History Month isn't just a time to acknowledge the struggles and triumphs of the past; it's also a celebration of resilience, excellence, and the power of community. As I look back on the incredible journey of Black people in Canada, I'm filled with gratitude for the trailblazers who have paved the way for progress. Their courage, determination, and unwavering spirit continue to inspire us all to dream bigger and reach higher. To kick off this month, I am pleased to share that my husband, Carl Alphonse and I will be presiding over the Julius Alexander Isaac Moot ("The Isaac") once again! The Isaac is a competitive, for-credit moot historically held at the Ontario Court of Appeal. It is named after the late Chief Justice of the Federal Court, Julius Alexander Isaac, who was the first Black judge to sit on the Federal Court of Canada. Every year since 2008, the Moot has focused on an area of law where issues of equity and diversity arise. For Black History Month and beyond, let's come together to honor the past, celebrate the present, and imagine a future filled with equality, justice, and opportunity for all. Let's commit to amplifying Black voices, supporting Black-owned businesses, and working towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society not just for this month, but throughout the entire year. #BlackHistoryMonth #Equity #Diversity #Inclusion

#BPIImpact: Celebrating Evans' Vision and Leadership The Black Policy Institute has given me the opportunity to glean into the global black experience. Connecting our communities and congregating amongst our shared obstacles is needed in this shifting world. Through the institute, I’ve gained the opportunity to amplify the lived experience of unheard communities as well as understand the way obstacles arise across continents. As we head into 2024 and continue down this path of change, I am confident the foundation of The Black Policy Institute will remain a hub for black leaders eager to connect internationally. One of the best experiences has been discussing the political landscape in the US following the events of 2020 and the passing of George Floyd. By far, the biggest impact TBPI has provided me with is the understanding across continents of how major institutions can serve as bastions for justice and injustice. These insights tell a story of a global shift that will have major ramifications for generations to come. The future is being illustrated right now and I am grateful to be a part of these conversations. We look forward to engaging more community members in the future across many media forms and continuing to expand the prowess of our community of change. Congratulations to Evan Quaintance for his impactful contributions at the Black Policy Institute. His dedication to amplifying unheard voices and navigating global political landscapes enriches our shared understanding. Today marks the beginning of Black History Month in the United States and we want to take this opportunity to reflect and celebrate the remarkable contributions of African-Americans to our nation, healthcare, and ASP. ASP was started by the visionary Dr. Tralance Addy who brought his interest in global health to the challenge of providing sterility to healthcare professionals. Because of Dr. Addy’s vision and leadership, millions of people have been protected during their most critical moments. Dr. Addy's impact is profound, echoing the legacy of trailblazers like Dr. James McCune Smith, the first African-American to earn a medical degree in 1837. From pioneering the modern blood bank to shaping the National Prevention Strategy, African-American healthcare professionals have left a lasting impact. Black History Month is a celebration of this rich and diverse history. It's an opportunity to recognize achievements across every facet of our society. As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, it’s essential to recognize the profound impact African American individuals have had on our society and the world at large. Their contributions span every industry and have paved the way for advancements that we often take for granted today. As Tom says on his post, take a moment to think about the technological marvels that shape our everyday lives. The humble yet revolutionary incandescent light bulb, the vast network of fiber optics enabling global communication, the convenience of mobile phones, the precision of GPS, and the awe-inspiring realm of space travel. It's a little-known fact that these innovations have a common thread: the brilliance of African American engineers and technologists. Sadly, the stories of these extraordinary individuals have often been overlooked, their achievements not receiving the recognition they rightfully deserve. This oversight is more than a historical inaccuracy; it's a loss to our collective understanding and appreciation of Black excellence. Black History Month provides a vital opportunity to correct these narratives. It's a time to delve into our past with honesty, to uncover and celebrate the contributions of African American innovators whose work has laid the foundations of our modern world. Moreover, this month serves as a reminder to support and empower the current and future generations of Black talent. Their visions, skills, and dedication are shaping our future, continuing a legacy of innovation and resilience. As we reflect on the trailblazers of the past and the pioneers of the present, let's ask ourselves: Who inspires us today? Who are the unsung heroes whose stories we should be sharing? How can we contribute to a more inclusive and equitable future? Vivek Goel is University of Waterloo president and vice-chancellor | Waterloo Region Record, Friday, May 3, 2024. “Canada’s post-secondary sector does not reflect the diversity of our country — particularly when it comes to Black academics. Only 2.3 per cent of the senior leaders at Canada’s universities are Black despite 4.3 per cent of the Canadian population identifying as Black. In 2023, a report for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council found that the level of Black scholars’ participation in its programs is under-representative and that rates are even lower in science, health and technology. The same report notes only 1.96 per cent of Canada research chairs in all sectors are held by Black-identifying individuals.” “Presidents of Waterloo and Laurier universities write that post-secondary institutions and society benefit when we allow diverse voices to enrich our teaching, learning, research and service.”
