Sometimes you don't see the progress you are making because you are constantly raising the bar. Focusing on small, incremental goals can have incredible benefits to your learning and career. It can have the side effect of being hard to see just how far you have come. Make a habit of noting down the small wins on a regular basis and celebrating yourself for the good times. A lot of us give ourselves a hard time if something doesn't go right. So when it does, no matter how small, make a note and celebrate that.

Today marks 6 months at Merit America. Here are a few things I've learned and been reminded of: 1) Career paths are not linear. I'm not in the role I was originally hired for. But an incredible door opened and I am so glad I walked through it. 2) Fundraising is joyful work. Nothing feels better than true partnership and admiration between donors and the organizations they support. 3) Dedicated, regular alone time to think/plan/reflect/rest is an extraordinary gift that I've never really prioritized (especially as a working parent) but now can't imagine ever living without. 4) Professional contentment is a role where your unique combination of skills, experiences, and perspective is needed and fully utilized. Where you can grow and learn but the experience gap isn't so wide that your contributions seem inadequate to the task at hand. (buuut this is very ennegram 3) 5) Work for leaders who make you excited for Monday mornings. I've been so lucky in this regard -- Merit, New Story, Teach For America, Allegheny - WOW. Six months from now, I hope to be able to say we built the development team Merit America needs to get where it's going. That we expanded our partnerships and increased our impact. That my extraordinary team (Amri Shahpuri, Tyler Adams, Bethany Orban and Bradley Seltzer) continues to thrive. Can't wait! #fundraising #impactfulwork #nonprofitleadership

A huge congratulations to pillar of our support team Jade Chester, who has been with SSQ since almost the very start and celebrates her 20th anniversary with us this year! 🥳🥂 We asked Jade to look back - and forward - and share her thoughts on how to keep yourself developing and moving in the right direction after a long time in one business. 💪 ******** "My anniversary has certainly been reflective for me. During my time at SSQ, the company has seen three leaderships, navigated two economic crises, a global pandemic and more recently the transition to an Employee Ownership Trust. Each change comes with a period of adjustment and resilience. I often check in with myself to assess if I am swimming in the right direction. I am a big believer in self-awareness and taking the time to look at a situation from all perspectives, understanding there is more than one view – this has contributed the most to maintaining my contentment within one business.   ✨ Staying motivated ✨ It's important to recognise that the need to feel like you are moving forwards has a huge impact on your motivation. Sometimes you put this down entirely to work goals, but it can also be due to your personal life and vice-versa. Make the effort to regularly review the aspects of your role that you enjoy the most (usually it’s the ones you think you are good at). Persevere to continue including them, despite conflicting demands on your time. I try to focus on some self-development and am passionate about trying new things. The latest has been breathing therapy - I cried for 48 hours straight for absolutely no reason!    ✨ Finding your fit ✨ Having joined SSQ at 16, I haven’t always thought that recruitment was the right industry for me. I now understand that SSQ is a people business and that I am a people person - so actually it is a better fit than I initially realised. Key traits that I enjoy the most are: a sense of humour, good values, hard work and shared appreciation. I consider myself very lucky to have worked with so many characters over the years! If I find myself in a serious headspace, there is usually a CSR day or a social just around the corner that balances that right out.  It’s not always about what you do, but who you do it with."
