Haden Roberts, couldn't agree more. Early evaluation of prospective risk for the overall longevity and protection of our Mater plans is critical. Long before submission to underwriting, we have to be able to identify warning signs and know when to decline interest. Cycling bad risk from PEO to PEO is not only bad for the individual PEO, but bad for the industry and the solutions we provide. One bad sale now could impact 10 great sales next year. Great post!
If you're in PEO sales and you do this - you're an idiot. Putting bad risk on your own master plan. I proposed to a group last month (prior to their renewal being issued). Our rates were slightly above current, so the plan was to wait until the renewal was issued to see where we stood. Renewal came in .... 50% increase by their current PEO master plan. Now before you tell me "it could be because the PEO's book is not running well" - Stop. No PEO is giving a 50% increase to a group that's running well. Something is going on with this specific group. 9 years ago, I probably would have sold the group ("I have a quota to hit!") .... and spent the next year reaping what I had foolishly sewn. It's not good for the client (when we inevitably have to give a big increase next year because they weren't priced appropriately) It's not good for my PEO (we take on huge claims liability and ruin our loss ratio) It's not good for my future sales efforts (now that I've put a bad group on our plan, makes it harder to sell other groups) So I politely declined them - "unfortunately I don't believe we'll be the right fit for each other this year, but would love to take another look next year if you're open to it!" Tons of nuance to this. Certainly exceptions to the rule (shock losses, etc.). Other perspectives?
