It's been a really positive start to this financial year for Wilson Browne Solicitors, and of course a great deal of planning went into it. With some exciting new hires to be announced in coming months to join some of the excellent hires already announced this year, coupled with busy teams, its certainly exciting times! But at no point will the Board (John Punni, Kevin Rogers and myself) our FD Steve Davis, any of our Partners, Directors, Heads of Team, Managers or quite frankly anyone at the firm, get complacent. I learned more in two years working for the best boss I've ever had than in the rest of my W2 career combined. One of his nuggets that stuck with me: When the market gives you an opportunity for a solid profit, don't screw around waiting for a better opportunity - jump on it with extreme urgency, because you never know what the market will do tomorrow. This lesson came from a deal our firm had signed up when a law changed the week before closing and instantly negated the business's value proposition. We avoided a wipeout, but the seller lost out on a life-changing fortune by mere days. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. #realestate #investing #multifamily #privateequity

Welcome to my fourth and final post covering Charlie Munger’s three rules for career satisfaction: 1. Don’t sell anything you wouldn’t buy yourself    2. Don’t work for anyone you don’t respect and admire 3. Work only with people you enjoy This week I discuss how Rule Number 3, work only with people you enjoy, applies to actuaries and data scientists. In Charlie’s words:  “Another thing you have to do is have a lot of assiduity. I like that word because to me it means: “Sit down on your ass until you do it.” I’ve had marvelous partners, full of assiduity, all my life. I think I got them partly because I tried to deserve them, and partly because I was shrewd enough to select them, and partly because there was some luck.” This wisdom from Charlie is super important. Credentialed actuaries have proven their assiduity, but in my experience many of us are not intentional enough about selecting the partners that we work with.  Most importantly, our best partners understand the value of our work, advocate for us, and help us deliver our messages to the broader organization.   Are you intentionally selecting the right people to work with?  If not, you need to make some changes.   If you’d like to talk this through, check out my website and book a meeting today!

I became an attorney sixteen years ago, and it’s been a rewarding ride. These are the two lessons I’ve learned since: 1. Effort matters When you start a business or climb the corporate ladder, we follow a common pattern: We compare ourselves to others. I’ve learned that progress comes from effort, not comparison. There will be people ahead of you, but they might have different goals or are playing a different game. And that’s OK. If I could go back in time, I’d tell my younger self to focus on his goals and tune out distractions. What matters is comparing yourself to what you were yesterday, not others. This is how I’ve prioritized my development as a professional and individual. 2. Focus on what you can control Attorneys must have their clients’ best interests in mind and focus on what they can control. I visualize this scenario as being on a boat in rough waters. You can’t control the winds and waves, but you can control your reactions. That’s what matters. When faced with adverse conditions (challenges) or a favorable wind (wins), I like to respond to those situations thoughtfully. As an entrepreneur, I wholeheartedly agree with Dan Cremons on this analogy, and it got me thinking about how this iceberg visual is also a great depiction of the private company market: what you see as an investor is only the tip of the iceberg. The majority of your investible universe is hidden. Let me elaborate: you'll see the inbounds from the advisors, you'll see the companies on the databases that everyone has access to, and you'll see anyone that wants to be found. But what about the millions of companies with owners and founders who just haven't considered it yet? Or are starting to think about an exit but haven't started any process yet? Our own proprietary data shows that 40% of companies (that are within our clients' investible universe and which we introduce our clients to) with revenues up to USD 50m have rarely or never been approached. Why? Because no one else finds them, these are you truly off the beaten track opportunities. Which goes to show just how much untapped potential there is out there - or - in the context of the iceberg - just how much is sitting below that watermark. When I first made the career change from the automotive industry to Edward Jones I was not sure of my decision. In hindsight, I could not be more grateful and excited about the future. I am really thankful for the relationships I have built with the families I serve.
