Is your fleet ready to embrace renewable diesel for cost savings and sustainability? According to a study by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), switching to renewable diesel could lead to a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions per truck life cycle by 67.3%, a stark contrast to the 30.0 to 39.5% decrease offered by battery electric vehicle (BEV) trucks. Unlike traditional fossil fuels, renewable diesel is derived from waste and residues, turning what was once considered waste into a valuable resource. This innovative fuel significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and offers operational benefits such as lower maintenance costs and improved vehicle performance. Adopting renewable diesel does not require any modifications to existing diesel engines, making it a practical and immediately deployable solution for the trucking industry. It also provides a reliable and consistent energy source, unlike some other renewable energy options that can be intermittent. While electric vehicles hold great promise for the future, the current challenges related to battery technology, charging infrastructure, and energy density make renewable diesel a more feasible option for the present (see chart below). The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) recently conducted a study that yielded significant findings. It revealed that the transition to battery-powered trucks is not only more cost-effective but also more operationally efficient than using renewable diesel (RD) fuel. While the initial costs of electric vehicle purchases and electric infrastructure may seem daunting, it’s important to consider the long-term perspective. Over 15 years, these investments are projected to cost the long-haul sector more than $1 trillion. In comparison, using renewable fuel to power ICE trucks will cost $203 billion to achieve similar decarbonization benefits. In some circumstances, renewable fuels can achieve greater GHG emissions savings for the available budget than battery electric vehicles. ·        Operators of electric vehicles should also consider the size and capacity of the batteries used in their vehicles and optimise these depending on the use case. Larger, heavier batteries offer improved vehicle range, but emit more GHG emissions during production, increase vehicle consumption and may also reduce payload capacity.
