What is evidence-based advocacy? Our #LBQConnect participant, DeeKay, explains what it means and why it's vital for Lesbian, Bisexual, and Queer advocacy. Data on the experience of LBQ people is scarce, which negatively impacts the visibility of LBQ issues and their relevance in advocacy agendas. Consequently, the rights and issues of LBQ people are radically underserved and under-resourced. Only 5% of global LGBTIQ funding (which itself represents less than 1% of all foundation and government funding) is specifically directed to LBQ issues. Our global LBQ program, LBQ Connect, works with advocates worldwide to develop LBQ-focused research initiatives that address needs and fill gaps. A strong LBQ movement is essential to advance human rights for all LGBTIQ people and improve all of our lives. Learn more about LBQ Connect here: https://lnkd.in/eymnUi4Q

As members of the LGBTQIA+ community age, they encounter unique challenges that underscore the importance of having a dedicated elder law attorney. It’s a tool that can offer peace of mind, knowing that their assets, health, and personal wishes will be respected, particularly at times when they may not be able to voice these wishes themselves. Got any plans for Thursday March 28th at 2pm EST? Over 600 have signed up for this free webinar on transgender issues in the workplace. This is notable, because they didn’t even know that the program has now been approved by the Law Society of Ontario for 90 minutes of EDI credit. (Just sayin’!) The webinar will weave together personal experience, literary references, (yes, literary!!!) social science data, and practical issues drawn from practice and reported cases. The goal is to help managers, HR and legal professionals be more aware of the transgender experience, and to share advice on how to successfully integrate and accommodate transgender employees in the workforce. And it’s just in time for an early celebration of the annual #transgenderdayofvisibility This is important stuff. 2023 was a year that saw a mainstream Canadian politician in a general election compare transgender children in schools to feces in food, although they put it somewhat more inelegantly. Whether it is arising from active hate, or just plain old lack of understanding, it isn’t a “somewhere else” problem. It’s drifting into the populist politics of today. And with StatCan reporting that roughly 1 in 300 Canadians are trans, it can be in an issue to manage in a workplace or job site near you. With more open discussion and awareness, we can help make 2024 a better year. Please join me and my friend and colleague Greg McGinnis of Mathews Dinsdale & Clark LLP for our contribution to this very big discussion.
Don't miss your opportunity to attend this timely presentation and discussion hosted by Greg McGinnis, a partner at the firm, and Sabine Matheson, Principal at StrategyCorp, a government relations, strategic communications, and management consulting firm. 🌈 Understanding Cultural Competency in Family Law 🌈 In our latest podcast episode, our associate attorney Christine Jordan, dives deep into the significance of cultural competency in legal representation, especially for the LGBTQ+ community. Key Takeaways: 🏳️🌈Cultural Competency is Crucial: It's about more than just knowing the laws; it's about understanding the people those laws affect. Christine emphasizes the importance of creating a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ clients, acknowledging their unique legal challenges in areas like family law. 🏳️🌈Representation Matters: From adopting children to dealing with divorce, LGBTQ+ individuals face distinct legal hurdles. For example, in Minnesota, if a child is born to a same-sex married couple, the non-birth parent must still adopt the child to gain legal rights, unlike in heterosexual marriages. 🏳️🌈Educating and Advocating: Legal professionals need to stay informed about the evolving terminology and respectful practices to effectively represent their clients. This includes everything from using correct pronouns to understanding the implications of recent laws that might affect the community. Christine also highlights the ongoing challenges and the importance of law firms being proactive in their support, ensuring that all clients feel respected and represented. 🎧 To hear more about how attorneys can better serve the LGBTQ+ community and about the intersection of cultural competency and family law, check out our full podcast episode at fromtheashescast.com. https://lnkd.in/gDMyvzSf We want to hear from you! THE IMPORTANCE OF LGBTQIA+ ADVOCACY IN CHALLENGING TIMES Amid times of conservatism and social setbacks, LGBTQIA+ advocacy becomes even more vital and necessary. DEFENSE OF RIGHTS: Law dedicated to the LGBTI+ community plays a crucial role in defending and expanding civil rights, combating discriminatory laws and ensuring equality before the law. AMPLIFICATION OF VOICES: It serves as a powerful voice for those who are often silenced, amplifying the demands and needs of the community before government agencies and society as a whole. AWARENESS AND EDUCATION: Through educational campaigns and awareness actions, LGBTQIA+ advocacy contributes to changing mentalities, combating prejudice and promoting a culture of respect and inclusion. ACCESS TO JUSTICE: Ensuring access to justice and specialized legal support for issues related to gender identity, sexual orientation and human rights is another fundamental aspect of this advocacy. RESISTANCE AND ADVANCE: In challenging times, LGBTI+ advocacy not only resists, but also advances, inspiring and strengthening the community to conquer spaces of equality and dignity. Let's continue fighting together for a world where everyone is respected, regardless of who they are and who they love.
