Australian insurer IAG and Singaporean carriers Singlife and International SOS's Odeon Re have joined a group of 19 insurers as founding members of a new climate alliance Forum for Insurance Transition to Net Zero (FIT). https://lnkd.in/g5QdNCns Created by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the forum will replace the Net-Zero Insurance Alliance that collapsed early last year amid exits by its founding partners. UNEP's Net Zero Insurance Alliance (NZIA) has been formally disbanded after being undermined by allegations of #antitrust violations by Republican politicians in the US. The NZIA has become a case study of whether competition law can act as a barrier to collective business action on sustainability issues - an issue that competition regulators are increasingly addressing in public guidance. The NZIA has been replaced by a new initiative - the Forum for Insurance Transition to Net Zero - providing a structured dialogue and multistakeholder forum to support the necessary acceleration and scaling up of voluntary climate action by the insurance industry and key stakeholders. The work of the FIT will also be guided by a legal team experts on antitrust and #competition laws, #sustainability, #insurance and #finance. Co-operators (Canada) and IAG (Australia) are amongst the founding FIT Participants. Australia will be represented on FIT's regulators consultative group by Sean Carmody of Australian Prudential Regulation Authority. Gordon Noble from University of Technology Sydney will sit on the Science, Research and Civil Society group. Launched at the 2012 #UN Conference on Sustainable Development, the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) #PrinciplesforSustainableInsurance (PSI)serves as a global framework for the insurance industry to address environmental, social and governance risks and opportunities. The #PSI initiative is the largest collaborative initiative between the UN and the insurance industry. AIA has been a signatory of the #PSI since 2021.
