Sounds like the start of a bad dad joke & the impact to Manhattan traffic was certainly no joke…
Neither were the challenges in finding a hotel room. In all of my post-COVID travels, it has been shockingly easy to find incredible hotel room deals… until this week in New York City.
I’m hoping the President & the Prince had an easier time finding a room than I did. If the article in the Wall Street Journal is any indication, we’re all going to have a harder time finding rooms in New York City given an increase in tourism & a decrease in #Airbnb options.
With the proliferation of doom & gloom #realestate headlines dominating the post-COVID era & recent fears of massive commercial real estate loan defaults, an increase in demand for hotel rooms & the accompanying industry growth & profitability is a ray of sunshine in an otherwise stormy real estate forecast.
Based on expert predictions, the increased cost of your hotel stay will likely impact you less than the broader economic impact of hotel buildings being foreclosed on by the lenders. The loss of the taxes generated by commercial real estate coupled with potential catastrophic losses in the financial sector would impact all of us more over the long term.
It wasn’t just heavy traffic, tightened hotel capacity & increased tourism that the 3 of us experienced, we also all three focused on the environment & #sustainability.
President Biden attended the UN summit focused on prodding world leaders to address the increasing pressure of climate change & the importance of international environmental cooperation & collaboration.
Prince William was in the city to promote The Earthshot Prize, which funds climate solutions.
I attended CREtech, the preeminent Proptech conference, where the opportunities to address the climate impact of real estate through technology is featured.
As I compose this post & ponder these experiences, it dawns on me that the positive headlines about tourism & the hotel real estate sector in NYC only increases the imperative that we implement & better use environmental proptech in hotels.
We can minimize the environmental impact even as we maximize tourism.
❓Rather than considering just price & location, should I give heavier consideration to how a hotel is addressing its impact on the environment when making my future reservations?
The President & the Prince can certainly bring more attention (and headlines) to the need to address climate impact than most of us can… and even though their security teams will always insure that I am kept at a distance from them physically, we can all still collaborate together to play our parts in addressing the environmental impact of the buildings we use, the cities we visit & the world we inhabit.
