Jennifer Crystal Chien talks about advocating for BIPOC in documentary industry in a very tangible way with Toni B. on โWhatโs up with Docsโ podcast. โDocumentary is a step behind the non-profit industryโฆโ โI think the documentary industry struggles with the same things that the fiction industry struggles withโฆโ โโฆthere is disconnect between who is asking the questions and who the film is forโฆโ โThere is sort of a limited number of portrayals of ourselves that are considered acceptable or supportable. And things that break outside of that are often finding it very difficult to get funding and support for. We have to question, โWhy is that?โโ โWe donโt need to just problemitize our communities and say, โWe can only see your communities if it touches upon these problems that we know your communities have.โ โฆ What happens to the rest of our lives? What happens to the fullness of our experiences?โ โHow can we become โwholeโ as BIPOC filmmakers?โ Literature is much older then film as a form of communication.. โWhen you look at a work of literature, you wouldnโt say, โWhat are the measures of social impact of this novel? And unless this novel can accomplish tangible concrete outcomes then we are not going to support the writer in creating this book.โ โฆ But there have been revolutions started with books. There have been wars that have started and ended with booksโ you know, complete changes in the way people see various aspects of society...โ
๐ NEW EPISODE OUT NOW: What challenges do BIPOC #filmmakers face working within the context of the white dominant narrative? We bring you "Whatโs Up with Docs feat. I coined the term digital campfires. Now I help brands build them. ๐ฅ Audience-first brand, content & community strategist | ex-FB & IG | Speaker, YouTube, Microsoft, McKinsey | Contributor, Harvard Business Review
If you're not listening carefully to your audience, you're at great risk. Just the latest reminder of this: a distinct lack of chatter I'm seeing about the Oscars, even though we're just a couple of days away from what is ostensibly the biggest entertainment event of the year. I'm not surprised, though, considering the growing divide between what audiences are actually watching and wanting, and what mainstream Hollywood entertainment is delivering. This disconnectโand its threat to the future of the entertainment business itselfโwas summed up neatly by Dr. Stacy L. S., a professor and founder of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism's Inclusion Initiative on a recent episode of Puck's "The Town" podcast. Here are a few of the choicest mic-drop moments from her interview with Matthew Belloni: ๐ฃ ๐๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ ๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐๐จ๐ง๐ง๐๐๐ญ ๐๐๐ญ๐ฐ๐๐๐ง ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐จ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง-๐ฆ๐๐ค๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฉ๐๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ ๐ฐ๐ก๐จ ๐๐ฎ๐ฒ ๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐๐ญ๐ฌ: "Though [the voters of the Academy and Hollywood green lighting teams] think they know what theyโre choosing when it comes to talent, authenticity [and] powerful storytelling, they are at a complete disconnect from the audience." ๐ฃ ๐๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ญ ๐๐๐ง ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ข๐๐ง๐๐๐ฌ ๐ ๐๐ง๐๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ง'๐ญ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ฌ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ: "The big joke is that, in a couple of Mondays, Iโm going to go into class and ask: how many of you watched the Oscars? [Perhaps] 2 or 3 people [will] raise their hands. How many more years will this be televised? The audience doesnโt care.โ ๐ฃ ๐๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฅ๐จ๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ก๐ ๐ก๐ข๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง ๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ: "Thereโs going to be a workforce crisis because the folks that are coming up through the ranks of these companies or graduating from colleges, they don't want to work at these legacy companies because of these very issues." ๐ฃ ๐๐ง ๐ฐ๐ก๐๐ญ ๐ง๐๐๐๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ก๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐๐ง ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ข๐ฑ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฆ: "Those executive decision making bodies ... they need to change and they need to change fast."
