Dear LinkedIn Community, I wanted to bring your attention to an important matter concerning the long-term care options available to our veterans. Currently, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers home-based primary care and 24-hour care at community living centers (CLC). However, there is a gap in support for veterans whose required level of care falls between these two options. Assisted living services can be particularly beneficial for veterans with conditions like moderate traumatic brain injury, who need daily care but not to the extent provided by a nursing home or CLC. H.R. 1815/S. 495, the Expanding Veterans’ Options for Long Term Care Act, aims to address this gap. The proposed bill mandates a three-year pilot program to provide assisted living services in at least six geographically diverse areas. Veterans eligible to participate include those already receiving nursing home level care paid for by the VA or eligible for such care. The bill also emphasizes the need for the VA to report on the cost of care at each assisted living facility, potential cost savings, participant feedback, and recommendations for the program's future. As advocates for our veterans, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) strongly supports this legislation, aligned with DAV Resolution No. 246. This is going to be absolutely seminal for the deployment of #immersive #technology in health. « Crucial to further scaling the use of immersive technology, VA has developed standardized resources, such as knowledge networks, #implementation plans, electronic health record templates, and standard operating procedures. » I have seen this before: they are the building blocks, recipe and methods that #VA developed and perfected to deploy #remote patient #monitoring at scale in routine care, more than a decade ago. Everything we learned from #RPM implementation at VA is at the foundation here, and taken to the next level. All necessary but not sufficient conditions - sine qua non - for implementation and #scaling. And no viability without scale. « Assumptions about the cost of implementation often focus on hardware, when in fact, much of the expense relates to content development and acquisition ». « Finally, and importantly, is the evolution of #data needed to evaluate the impact of experiences continuously and rigorously within the devices. (…) Continued efforts are underway to build and automate ingestion of objective data available through immersive systems and integrate them with patient records. » - The decades of VA investments in a comprehensive, longitudinal health records system that works across settings make this possible and pay off. As we chatted with a friend this week, who is super well-versed in immersive technology development and implementation at scale (you know who you are): it’s not about the tech. It’s mostly about the people and everything else BUT the tech. Most impressive, is how it changes culture. Once you build that muscle, you’re ready for the next thing. Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-26) has questioned why a $9 million outside report was needed to analyze the Murphy Administration's COVID-19 pandemic response when proper bipartisan legislative oversight could have brought truth and accountability to residents.   Senate Republicans called for a bipartisan review committee in 2020 to investigate the State's COVID response, including the harm done to veterans in State-run nursing homes.
