It's performance review season and managers, it's time to roll up your sleeves! Giving feedback to your team members is an essential part of your role, and it's crucial to make it count. After all, each team member contributes approximately 2000 hours every year towards your and team goals. So it's only fair that you spend at least 2 hours - 1 hour to listen to their achievements and 1 hour to capture written feedback. Performance reviews… time to give feedback. But are we in danger of sometimes flooding people with TOO MUCH feedback – so much that it overwhelms them?   That got me to thinking that we, as leaders, should reign it in a bit. Be constructive, but don’t overwhelm.   It also reminded me of the need to avoid what I call ‘righteous feedback’ – where we’re so sure that we’re right. Sometimes we’re not. As a leader, effective communication of feedback to your team is crucial. Waiting too long to address important issues can pose risks for your organization. Provide feedback promptly, offering specific examples of what success looks like. Avoid saving feedback for performance reviews and group settings to stay closely connected to the details and sustain team morale. Lastly, as a leader, you should always negotiate and agree on what you're going to measure your employees on. Do you know how to give effective feedback? Adopting an organization-wide model for giving feedback can boost team cohesiveness, performance, and morale. My favorite is the G.A.I.N. Feedback Model, which stands for Goal, Action, Impact, Next Steps. It can be used for both positive and constructive feedback. Here’s how it works: GOAL - State the purpose of the discussion, your intentions, and the desired outcome. ACTION - Provide the facts about what happened, not your interpretations. IMPACT - Describe the effects of the action and what was impacted. NEXT STEPS - Outline the next steps that you’d like to see occur to achieve your desired results.
