🚩 New in #TourismGeographies 🏄♀️ Valuing surfing ecosystems: an environmental economics and natural resources management perspective. 📜 Authors: Ana Manero & Leon Mach 📣 A novel framework for characterizing the values of surfing ecosystems and conducting economic assessments, based on six main features is proposed: (i) surf breaks, (ii) surfing resources (iii) surfing ecosystems (iv) economic values (v) economic valuation (vi) equity and sustainability 🚩 The surfing ecosystems valuation framework can assist tourism scholars by providing a systematic approach for assessing the impacts of surf-visitation over time and across regions. But after the run is over and settled, somewhere around April towards the summer. With market conditions and current indicators that won’t disappear into 2024, What do you think will happen? How hard the fall could be? Bumpy landing? No crystal ball here. I’m a pure optimist. Just focusing on making progress one day at a time. What is going to happen will happen. Markets It’s like surfing, you may catch the best wave of your life, but a wave will eventually lose its energy as well. Friction or the restoring force eventually causes the motion to lose its energy and to die out. This gradual reduction of amplitude is called damping. ( Not dumping 😉) So what do we do? Grab our surfboard and start paddling back to position yourself to wait patiently for the next wave. Once you are convinced that this is the wave you want to ride, start paddling with a calm and controlled speed as the wave approaches. As you feel the wave lifting you, accelerate your paddle strokes to match the speed of the wave. Maintain a smooth transition from a slow speed to a fast speed, similar to an airplane taking off. Careful with wiping out!😂 What is worst for a surfer? No waves. Complete flat for periods of time. We use this time to grow, discover, invest in yourself, create, build and add value. So it’s not worst, it’s actually a good thing. No waves? No problem. Keep going. Life is a blesssing and the world is our playground. Even when there is evil people trying to destroy this idea. Roughly one year ago, I decided to quit my job as a product team lead in order to… well, I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted. And what does one do when feeling a bit adrift in life? My genius yet cliché answer: surfing. So off I went to Sri Lanka, where I was instantly hooked on surfing in warm water surrounded by turtles and happy faces. However, my excitement was soon dampened: After only a few days of surfing, I found myself in agonizing pain in the rib area, making surf almost impossible. My rib was not fractured, but no one had a medical explanation - let alone solution - beyond the recommendation to rest and avoid the water. Fast forward six months, and I am launching Heeru, a brand that aims to make the waves pain-free for all surfers, starting with a ribguard that helps to prevent rib-area pain. It does so by better distributing pressure in the area where the surfer's torso presses into the (hard) surfboard. In these past months, I’ve learnt so much. Some highlights: - how to collaborate with medical professionals in product development - a kind of stakeholder I have never worked with beforehand - how to apply my passion for building products to something that hits very close to home, with an amazing beta tester community of surfers around the world - how to build an e-com business in Germany, a country that holds end-boss-status in terms of bureaucracy - how bootstrapping can be both stressful and liberating at the same time So yeah, this is an ode to changing the course of your life from time to time, even if the end destination is uncertain in that moment. Life, as the rumor goes, is more exciting that way. 🐥 I CHICKENED OUT!!! A lesson from Uluwatu that I apply today to business and life Back in 2012-2013, my wife and I called Bondi Beach, Australia home. 🇦🇺 We were about a 5-minute, barefoot walk to the beach and surf. It was during this time that I developed a passion for surfing. Every morning, I'd hit the waves before work, navigating the highs and lows of the vast ocean, honing my skills with each session. Fast forward to a planned vacation in Indonesia, and here I was with an opportunity to surf one of the world’s most famous breaks --> Uluwatu. I'd dreamt of surfing this spot for months, and now, I had my chance. As I arrived in Indonesia, the anticipation grew. The first few days were spent catching waves near Seminyak, Bali, warming up for what awaited at Uluwatu. However, when the moment arrived to paddle out, fear gripped me. 😨 The paddle-out required navigating through a cave, a challenge I'd never faced before -- the timing had to be perfect with the tide. Also, it was a reef break, which I had very little exposure to back in Australia, and that added an extra layer of uncertainty. In that moment, standing right in front of this incredible wave, I hesitated, and ultimately, I turned around. I CHICKENED OUT!!! I returned to the comfort of Sydney's beach breaks, leaving behind the chance to ride Uluwatu's legendary waves. Regret settled in, a constant reminder of the chance I didn't take. Yet, in that regret, I found a profound lesson. ⚡ Business and life, like surfing, present opportunities that may seem daunting at first. Uluwatu taught me that hesitation can be a costly companion. Since that day, I've embraced the mantra: if you have an opportunity, SEIZE IT. You never know when another chance like that will come your way. So navigate the opportunities in front of you with a keen eye and the understanding that sometimes, the most incredible experiences are just beyond the cave, waiting for us to paddle through. 🌊✨ What opportunity did you miss out on? Are you afraid to nose-dive? A catchy phrase and even an off-topic here on LinkedIn? Right now, I am on my holiday surfing everyday pretty much. … And I had a light bulb moment where I felt a strong analogy of surfing to every other part in life (which happens quite often though). It is about taking that wave, or not. Daring to paddle in or not. You have to give 100% and commit to a wave when paddling for it, otherwise you will not align with the speed of the wave and loose it. It’s all or nothing. On big days which was today, there pops up the question in the fearbrain of daring to go all in. Doubts arise and fear kicks in: What if I nosedive? - meaning the worst wipeout possible in my opinion at least. It’s when you are too steep on that wave and not managing to stand up on the board and you go head first into the “washing machine” of the wave. On bigger days, that means you will be hold down for longer and you are stuck quite some time in the wave swirl, and even taking the other waves of the set on the head when catching for fresh air again. So quite a risk to take into consideration right? So why doing the effort anyway (next to paddling for hours just to catch 1 or 2 waves depending on the conditions)? And that’s my point… The reward of surfing a bigger wave is enormous. You cannot put it into words. It’s what makes you addicted. It is what makes you feel whole and once with the world for that moment. It’s the surfers high basically. And for that feeling it’s always worth it. So it means in surfing you need to dare taking that step, committing to paddling all in, overcoming your fearbrain only to have a slightly chance of the reward. You will never know how the wave will turn out in the end. It could mean, you will end up nose-diving and experiencing a horrible wipe-out…. OR it could also mean you will be surfing the best wave of your life (so far). And here comes the analogy to every life situation and I felt it so strongly today as I have surfed the best wave of my life so far… ✨it’s always better to try and fail than to have never tried at all.✨
