How do diet and physical activity modulate cell metabolism, and especially energy metabolism? How does our exposome remodel our metabolism and how does that contribute to health and disease? How can the metabolism and biomedical research contribute to measure / quantify / predict the influences of environmental exposure on human health and disease? These questions and others will be answered during this course. A crosstalk of different views, from life and health sciences, from cell and molecular biology, nutrition, and endocrinology to humanities, legal and social sciences will contribute for a holistic view of what determines our ONE HEALTH.

🌟 Understanding Metabolically Healthy Obesity (MHO) 🌟 In 2016, a 25-year-old woman, "Mary," joined a longitudinal obesity study. Despite her BMI of 33.7, classifying her as having obesity at 215 pounds, Mary was metabolically healthy. Five years and 68 pounds later, her health markers remained stable, challenging conventional views on obesity. Studies identify subsets of such individuals with good metabolic health, termed MHO, affecting 6-60% of those with high BMIs. Mary's story highlights that obesity may not always lead to illness. Individuals with MHO maintain healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, insulin sensitivity, and liver fat levels despite their BMI. This phenomenon suggests that the health risks associated with obesity might be overstated, pushing back against the stigma of larger bodies. Critics argue that MHO could be a temporary state, but evidence shows many people with MHO remain healthy for years. The NHANES III study found that 41% of participants with obesity had MHO, with no increased risk of death from cardiovascular or other causes. Understanding MHO challenges long-held assumptions about weight and health. Reducing weight stigma and promoting compassionate care are crucial steps toward improving health outcomes for all. Roughly the same number of women suffer from endometriosis as from diabetes. From September 2023, the Health T Level specification uses the menstrual cycle and Endometriosis as named examples learners need to understand. We were delighted to have Vickie Williams, a PhD student at The Open University, present her doctoral thesis which explores the experience of endometriosis in the workplace and the influence of menstrual policy. 👉 Aging, Functioning, and Rehabilitation: A Workshop 📅 Feb 16 - 17, 2024 📢 The National Academy of Medicine and the University of Lucerne jointly present an international workshop on Aging, Functioning, and Rehabilitation, focusing on the World Health Organization's concept of functioning for redefining health, emphasizing healthy aging and the future of rehabilitation as a key health strategy. Experts will explore topics such as healthy longevity through rehabilitation, the investment case for rehabilitation in longevity, improving service delivery, and advocating for health and social policy. PCOS is a complex, systematic & multifaceted condition that can impact somebody in many ways, visible & invisible to those around them. And for a condition as prevalent, and impactful as PCOS, it's shocking how poor the current understanding, education & awareness is of PCOS by health professionals and the general public alike. Everyday I hear stories such as; 🤦 "My doctor said I only have PCOS because I'm overweight" 🤦 "I was told because I have PCOS I can never have children" 🤦 "I was never told was part of PCOS" Due to PCOS so heavily impacting your hormones, and how many roles & systems your hormones play a role in, there are just so many symptoms that PCOS may trigger. The good news is: Research is showing that you can hugely improve your PCOS by correction your lifestyle. Things I speak about so often here.

I appreciate the research review on definitions of successful aging 🧓. As it rightly points out, aging encompasses physiological, cognitive, psychosocial and lifestyle factors. Supporting older adults should take a 🤝 holistic approach beyond just health issues. The research found that the absence of disease is not enough for successful aging - one can age well despite chronic conditions through psychological adaptation and social engagement 👥. This aligns with my view that aged care must provide 💯 personalized support tailored to each senior's preferences and priorities. 🆕 While ensuring quality care for older adults, we should focus more on quality of life as perceived by each individual rather than overburdening the industry with blanket compliance measures. The goal should be supporting overall well-being based on personal priorities. 👍 As the article states, we need more consensus on standard measures of successful aging. Improved 💻 data collection on biomedical, functional, social and subjective indicators would help the aged care sector better understand older adults' experiences and needs. 📊 Measuring quality-of-life outcomes will also evaluate the effectiveness of services in enabling active participation and life satisfaction. 😊 Care for older Australians should facilitate overall well-being, not just treat diseases. More personalized support calls for better individual-level data to inform care plans and assess their impact on successful aging as defined by seniors themselves. 👴👵 Assistive technologies like wearables and ambient sensors 📲 can enable such personalized data collection and support. 🤝
