Having recently completed a competency program review with the College of Alberta Dental Assistants, I strongly agree with this post! In fact, as I met with Dental Assistants from different areas of Alberta I recognized such similar challenges to other groups.
As a Licensed Practical Nurse, I worked for years to help the health system and policy makers understand and value the contribution of everyone in the system. Yet I’m still left wondering…
Why is it so difficult for us to value a persons education and experience? Why aren’t we better at assessing competence based on where someone is today? Why do we build hoops for people to jump through to prove their worth?
When workforce shortages are an issue in many, if not most fields, why aren’t we better at accepting people’s strengths based on where they’ve been, looking at what they’ve learned, and what they’ve done?
Now as a contractor, I find it so refreshing to openly note that I am bringing some skilled partners to a job with me. It’s ok to admit that while I’m very skilled at organizing, planning and managing a project, I may not be great at wading through an Excel spreadsheet and making sense of reams of data. But the great news is I know someone who is a self-professed ‘data geek’ and happy to help on the project!
If we all think and act alike, how will we ever build, create, and innovate?!

“Certified Dental Assistants are highly trained oral health care professionals and vital assets in dental offices, often described as the backbone of the practice. Their extensive education enables them to deliver enhanced care while ensuring a safe environment for patients.”
— Excerpt from “The Value of Dental Assistants”
The Ontario Dental Assistants Association (ODAA) strongly believes in the value of Certified Dental Assistants. Through our “The Value of Dental Assistants” campaign, we’re highlighting the skills and knowledge they bring to their workplace and, with the help of the Ontario Dental Association (ODA), emphasizing the integral role they play on the oral health care team.
