This year is now known as the "Year of the NCO" in Space Operations Command. As a former NCO and servant of many current NCOs, I think this is awesome. An entire organizational vision to empower our NCOs and ensure leaders up and down the chain value NCOs as they should. It's also a tad disheartening that we have to have this called out. NCOs have always been the backbone of our military, and losing sight of that will 100% derail us against strategic competition. Perhaps it's the prior NCO and SNCO in me but I always tell my NCOs that THEY run the organization. THEY have the skills, expertise, and tactical-level connections that drive mission success. I should have seen the Year of the NCO coming though as many of my NCOs are surprised when I follow through on my words. There is no greater joy as a leader and mentor when your personnel embrace this and run the unit with precision, strategic thinking, and grace. It actually makes the leader's job easier and drives successful ops faster and more efficiently. It's simply amazing. I challenge all my fellow servants out there to empower their NCOs...TRULY empower them in word and action. My military unit got a new Brigade Commander recently, and he pulled all of us leaders into a room to introduce himself and share his plans for our brigade. He started the discussion off with a question to each of us, “What is our mission as a unit?” We all took some time to ponder and began ideating to ourselves. Some of us were thinking our mission is to take care of our soldiers, others were thinking we exist to serve our communities. His answer should not have surprised any of us given we're a combat unit, but on the contrary, we were almost taken aback by the simplicity in his response: “We exist to win America’s wars.” Quite a sobering message.   100% of us in that room have no desire to fight another war. But that’s not his point. He bluntly shared our #1 priority as a unit, so we have laser focus in our leadership approach, a process I’m in full support of. Often times as leaders we cascade down too many priorities to our teams, or worse yet the wrong ones. Vigilant prioritization is crucial for our teams to succeed.   For me as Chief of Staff for GIN, my priorities are simple: Maintain strong profitability and ensure employee growth and satisfaction. Now, there’s plenty of other "priorities" I focus on, but at the end of the day these are my North Star.

For anyone in a #leadership position at any level and those aspiring to get there, I highly recommend reading "The Mission, The Men, and Me: Lessons From a Former Delta Force Commander" by Pete Blaber. I've read (or listened to) plenty of leadership- and business-focused #books though I tend to gravitate to #lessons taught through #history and, particularly, the #military. While I'd never directly relate being in #business to actual military service, the perspectives are unique. This book covers a series of #GuidingPrinciples to guide truly meaningful lessons, including: 1. The mission, the men, and me. 2. Don't get treed by a chihuahua. 3. When in doubt, develop the situation. 4. Imagine the unimaginable. Humor your imagination. 5. Always listen to the guy on the ground. 6. It's not reality unless it's shared. I'll share this short excerpt: "How do you ensure you and your organization establish and maintain a shared reality? The answer is common sense. Let common sense guide your thinking, your decision-making, and the way you operationalize both. The single best thinking and decision-making tool a leader has is to consistently conduct reality checks by asking a profoundly simple question: What’s your recommendation?" That's all I'm sharing. I'm already halfway through, "Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win" by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, and can already tell it'll be my next recommendation.

Have you ever really thought about what humility is? Or is it just one of those things that you know when you see it. Well, take a minute and think up a definition. Go on, I’ll wait. I watched a Simon Sinek’s podcast of Blake Hall, CEO of ID.me and former Army Ranger Platoon Leader, during which Sinek recounted the 5th Chief Master Sargent of the Air Force Bob Gaylor’s definition: “Humility is being open to the ideas of others.” Let that sink in. Now think of some of the leaders that you know. Who leads with humility and who doesn’t? Hall went on to share a great deal about his time in the military including his 15-month deployment in Iraq tracking high-value targets. When Sinek asked Hall what his proudest moment as a leader was, Hall described a horrendous, coordinated attack throughout Mosul that began just meters away from his platoon. They reacted swiftly and after all was said and done, his entire platoon was still intact. Hall’s commander declared that his platoon saved the lives of at least 20 Americans. Hall’s final thought on the day to Sinek was that he was grateful that he was able to “soak up the collective wisdom and bring it to bear as a leader.” Not that is the definition of humility in action. Harvard Business School Professor Clay Christensen asked PhD students to define humility. Do you think it matches your definition? Turns out they saw it as a byproduct of confidence. This take suggests that true humility comes from a secure sense of self, which makes leaders better listeners and, ultimately, more effective. Are your leaders struggling to lead?
