Good news ⬇️ Australia has decriminalised abortion! Last week, Western Australia became the last Australian state or territory to decriminalise abortion, paving the way for improved abortion access. What do the changes mean? ➡️ Abortion has been removed from Western Australia’s criminal code ➡️ There is no longer a need for multiple GP referrals to access an abortion ➡️ Pregnancy options counselling will now be optional (this was previously mandatory) ➡️ Abortion care will be accessible up to 23 weeks of pregnancy, extended from 20 weeks Celebrating this change, Lana Hogan, Acting Nurse Unit Manager for MSI Australia in Perth, said: “The implementation of these laws will reduce the stress and uncertainty many women and pregnant people face when trying to access timely abortion care. As an abortion provider, the ability to offer essential healthcare services without the constraints of outdated laws is wonderful." It's encouraging to see other countries move towards decriminalisation as we campaign for this to be replicated in the UK. In the coming weeks, MPs will vote on an amendment which, if passed, will mean that no one will face prosecution for ending their own pregnancy in England and Wales. Gosh I’m proud of my new chosen country. 🇦🇺🦘🌏 The last state of Australia has taken steps to make access to #abortion easier. My British 🇬🇧💂🏻♂️💷 lovelies - did you know that soon MPs will vote on an amendment on abortion law soon? If passed it will mean that no one will face prosecution for ending their own pregnancy in England and Wales. Regardless of your beliefs, surely we can all agree on everyone having autonomy over their own bodies? And not facing a potential prison sentence for their choices? MSI Reproductive Choices UK provides guidance on how to lobby your MP to vote the right way on this. And a question for you. Do you think this content is #NSFLinkedIn? Ask yourself why. Why wouldn’t women rights be worthwhile discussing in the workplace? We’re starting to see employers open up. Some employers recognise that half of the workforce face very real issues - spanning from parental leave and pregnancy loss to menopause & perimenopause. So why wouldn’t reproductive rights be one of those things that we talk about and support employees around? That’s my question to you for this weekend. Oh, and write your MP ✍🏼

Abortion Decriminalisation ⚖ An opinion piece was released in the Guardian this week about the decriminalisation of abortion in the UK. The article argues that abortion should be removed from criminal law. This does not mean deregulation, it will be moved into medical regulation, to ensure abortion-care is carried out safely. They argue for decrim for the following reasons: 👉 The increase in prosecution (or attempts) of women procuring abortions via irregular means 👉 The decriminalisation of abortion in Northern Ireland 👉 The threat to abortioncare access after the overturning of Roe vs Wade in the USA And I will add one: Because abortion should be safe, legal and free for all those who require it! 📢 No other form of healthcare sits within criminal law, and neither should abortion! FROM THE ARCHIVES: On this day in 1989, on August 3, LEAF intervened in the case of Daigle v. Tremblay (1989) in defense of a woman’s fundamental right to abortion access – a right that continues to face active challenges today. In this case, Chantal Daigle and Jean-Guy Tremblay separated when Daigle was 18 weeks pregnant, and she decided to have an abortion. Tremblay then sought to prevent her abortion through an injunction. Initially, the court ruled in favor of Tremblay, ruling the fetus as a "human being" with rights. LEAF intervened, arguing that there was no constitutional recognition of a right to life for fetuses or for the right to procreation for potential fathers. Granting such rights would undermine women's freedoms and equality and the injunction procedure also exacerbated the difficulties in obtaining abortion services. Ultimately, the Court found that the alleged rights for both the fetus and potential father did not exist. - Bodily autonomy and the ability for an individual to make their own decisions about their body is a fundamental freedom. From the past to present, this should not change. Yet, more than three decades later, abortion access continues to be attacked around the world. The fight to defend reproductive rights and access to safe abortion is a part of a long-standing journey that LEAF will continue to be a part of both 30 years ago and now.
