Why are pathways between learning and earning so often broken? Drawing on insights uncovered at a convening of experts across #highered, #workforce, #philanthropy, and #policy, a new report from WGU Labs identifies key challenges including a lack of a shared language around skills, outdated approaches to student resources and internships, a one-way learning model, and overlooked transitional periods in the learner journey.    While improving partnerships between higher ed and the workforce has been a shared goal for some time now, it’s clear these efforts can be improved upon. Insights From Justice-Impacted Talent: In a recent panel for SCBC members, justice-impacted employees shared five considerations for companies to lower barriers to employment and support career advancement: 1. Prioritize Skills-first Hiring Practices — Focus on an individual’s abilities, rather than their criminal history. 2. Recognize That Language Matters — Review your job descriptions and consider inclusive language that encourages justice-impacted individuals to apply. 3. Establish Partnerships for Impact — Form external partnerships to strengthen your second chance employment strategy. Employers can’t be everything to everyone. 4. Establish Connectivity — Set up an affinity group or employee resource group for second chance employees to strengthen relationships and build social capital. 5. Provide Training & Advancement Opportunities — Consider creating or partnering with an apprenticeship program to help your second chance talent develop technical skills and foster workplace confidence. ICYMI: AHLA is applauding U.S. House passage of H.R. 6655, A Stronger Workforce for America Act, which reauthorizes the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). The vote was 378 to 26.   This bipartisan bill makes necessary changes to the decade-old law, providing critical updates to WIOA that are aligned with the skills needed for careers and advancement, hiring needs and demands of employers, and strengthening pathways through youth initiatives and second chance hiring programs.   AHLA endorsed the legislation and will continue to advocate for effective apprenticeship programs that promote career growth in the hotel industry.
