There is an interesting paper from Felix Redmill at the link below. It talks about the equal importance of not alone being safe but also being able to demonstrate that safety. Prove the achieved safety if you like. I believe the paper is around 20 years old from the references. Lines which caught my eye include * Safety must not only be achieved but also demonstrated * It is not sufficient for them merely to work within rules, for it is they who must decide what rules should apply and, for this they must use their judgement * Standards perform two functions. They remind us of what we should do and they make what we do repeatable. Since many people want to avoid judgement and be told what to do, standards can be very useful. But someone has to decide what should be done. In using a standard we transfer responsibility for the decision to its authors. What books are the must-haves in your safety library? There are some books I think every safety professional should have read, and one of them is "Industrial Accident Prevention", by Herbert Heinrich. Yes, not everything he stated almost 100 years ago turned out to be true, but he certainly deserves credit for his contributions to the safety profession. Give it a read - it's remarkable how much of what Heinrich wrote such a long time ago is still applicable today. And here is the kicker: Yesterday I was lucky and got hold of the 2nd edition from 1941!!! It fits really nicely on my safety bookshelf. So what's in your safety library?
