As the debate around reparations intensified in California, members of the Black community stepped forward to share their perspective on what should be done to address systemic racism. In KQED’s “The Road to Reparations in California”, we learn how citizens in other states have held organizations and communities accountable for past wrongs. The video is a look at how reparations can be accomplished. And now that the California Reparations Task Force has delivered its landmark 1,200-page report with 115 recommendations for reparative measures, it will be up to the state legislature — and pressure from community organizers — to keep the momentum moving toward restitution. https://lnkd.in/g635vJGM

🌟Journey of Courage and Truth: My Story of Resilience🌟 At 44, I've found the courage to share a story I've hidden for decades. As one of the twelve girls at the Coke County Juvenile Justice Center in the '90s, my journey has been one of pain, silence, and eventual empowerment. This story isn't just mine. It's about Sara Lowe and many others who suffered in silence. Lured by promises of rehabilitation at Wackenhut's facility, we faced a reality far from what was pledged. Abuse, neglect, and a system that turned a blind eye - this was our truth. I was silenced once with money at 19, but the temporary glamour of wealth quickly faded, leaving me to confront the deeper scars of my experience. The loss of my best friend, who named my daughter, to suicide on the day of our lawsuit victory, was a turning point. It underscored a harsh reality: our fight was never about money; it was about justice and acknowledgment. Today, I stand to tell our story, not just for me but for Sara, who tragically couldn't bear the weight of her unacknowledged pain. It's a reminder that behind every corporate facade, there are human lives at stake. And while those responsible may not have faced consequences, our voices can now be heard. This post is more than a narrative of past woes; it's a call for accountability, change, and the protection of the innocent. Let's ensure no other child endures what we did. So when people think I’m absolutely bananas for saying I want to build a $200 million dollar theme park in Texas question my leverage, here you go. 💅🏼 I don’t think anybody wants me to make a big fuss about this, and I’m not trying to. I’m pretty sure I’m not gonna have any problems getting it done. 🤠 https://lnkd.in/gSd9e_Gi https://lnkd.in/gWFsrNkF #JusticeForSara #SurvivorStory #SpeakUp #Accountability #TexasYouthCommission #Wackenhut #Texas #juvenilejustice #TYC

Twenty-five years have passed since that April day that etched sorrow into the hearts of Columbine High School. Two armed students took the lives of 12 of their peers and a cherished teacher and then their own lives. The reverberations of that tragic day have rippled through the years, leaving a sad narrative of killers and victims often repeated in the mainstream media. But what that narrative misses is Columbine’s story of recovery, resilience and triumph. It is in the school’s very fabric, where the emphasis is that every individual, from the principal to the first-day freshman, matters. As Columbine sophomore Madison Price told us, “It’s just the kind of thing that you can feel.” Reporters and editors from our two dozen Denver area newspapers collaborated on a collection of stories we dubbed, "How Columbine changed us." That hard-to-describe feeling is a soft finding for a newsroom that spent months parsing through stories of grief and perseverance in interviews with survivors, past and present school officials, teachers, security experts and even media critics. We sought the answer to a simple question: How has the 1999 Columbine shooting changed the school over the years – and everything else? On one hand, nothing has changed. Gun violence is rampant in the United States. For instance, the stunning tally of deaths and injuries provided by the Atlas of American Gun Violence is only necessary because of the almost-daily barrage of headlines chronicling shootings. Since Columbine, schools across the country have increased security measures. The Jefferson County School District, which oversees the high school, points to classroom doors that lock from the inside. There are single-point entry systems at schools that ensure students, staff and visitors pass through controlled checkpoints. Add to that security cameras, once a rarity, metal detectors and scanners. Much of the changes are meant to ferret out people carrying guns. Yet our reporting did not take us to the raging debates over guns, like whether background checks are enough or if teachers should be armed. Instead, we explored how chaos among rescuers during the Columbine incident led to improved coordination today, helping bridge gaps to make all schools safer. We also looked at the media’s role during and after the shooting to glean lessons. Yet the story those closest to Columbine wanted us, and our readers, to know most is that the shooting doesn’t define Columbine. What they want America to know is that what makes everyone safer is a school culture where everyone is appreciated for who they are and can contribute to a kind of indomitable spirit that has emerged and evolved with intentionality since 1999. That theme is embodied every April 20, the anniversary of the shooting, in the school’s Day of Service. “We have turned that day into something so positive,” teacher Mandy Cooke told us. “And that is what I am most proud of..." Obviously as is absolutely the case with regards to every discipline and profession, there are, of course "bad/ corrupted criminals-in-disguise", effectively. That must be rooted out. However, if you are going to let an exceptionally tiny minority of such sorry excuses-for people justify your not actively supporting the #thinblueline, then you are absolutely one of the also exceptionally tiny but - generally - obnoxiously-loud minority, who are a giant part of the problem. That is, the problem of the very deliberate dividing of this nation, the epidemic of crime in far too many formerly safe cities and towns and generally, the continuing breakdown of law and order, the Rule of Law and the emerging reign of an increasingly-obvious also very deliberate, Two-Tiered so-called "Justice" system. +++ But that's just what I think might be happening and might be some of the causes. What do you all think? #surveysays
A sea of blue enveloped Merrick Road outside of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church this morning. Police Officers joined us from across the globe to honor our hero, Detective First Grade Jonathan Diller- standing shoulder to shoulder with us, and comforting his extraordinary family. The patches on the officers’ shoulders may be different, but we are forever bound by our solemn oaths to serve and protect our communities. The same principles Jonathan Diller lived by: To make our world a better, safer place for all. #FidelisAdMortem
